ZURICH, March 29 (Reuters) – Trade talks between Switzerland and the United States will continue \u200cbeyond March following a preliminary accord \u200con tariffs struck last year, Swiss President Guy Parmelin said.<\/p>\n
Switzerland \u200bwas subject to the highest U.S. tariffs in Europe when U.S. President Donald Trump in August imposed a 39% duty on products imported \u200cfrom the country.<\/p>\n
In \u2060November, Bern sealed an initial deal to cut the tariffs to 15%. \u2060Switzerland later began talks to formalise that accord, which Washington was pressing to conclude by \u200bthe end \u200bof March.<\/p>\n
In February, \u200bthe U.S. Supreme Court \u200cstruck down Trump’s global tariffs, prompting him to order a fresh 10% global duty.<\/p>\n
In March, the U.S. launched new investigations against major trading partners, including Switzerland, casting further uncertainty over \u200chow talks would proceed.<\/p>\n
Parmelin, who \u200bis also the Swiss \u200beconomy minister, told \u200bstate broadcaster RSI this weekend the \u200cMarch target was “de facto” \u200bno longer \u200bapplicable and that negotiations would continue.<\/p>\n
The next round of Swiss-U.S. trade talks is likely \u200bto take place \u200cin April, according to two people familiar \u200bwith the matter.<\/p>\n
