(Graphic created using AI: Felix Franke \/ ETH Zurich)<\/p>\n<p>This contrasts with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity\u2019s C2PA standard, which relies on a camera\u2019s main processor to sign photos with a cryptographic seal. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91515883\/scientists-designed-a-way-to-save-our-brains-from-fake-ai-videos\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener nofollow\">Fast Company explains<\/a> that camera companies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2023\/10\/26\/leica-m11-p-is-worlds-first-camera-to-embrace-content-credentials\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leica<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2025\/10\/30\/sony-is-the-first-camera-company-to-verify-authenticity-of-video-content\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sony<\/a>, that have included C2PA make it work by sending the digital information from the sensor down an internal wire to the camera\u2019s main computer chip. Once the data arrives at the computer chip, it\u2019s then that the processor adds the cryptographic C2PA signature. <\/p>\n<p>But that small commute is a liability. Feasibly, a hacker could intercept the real feed and swap it with a synthetic one. The camera would then stamp the C2PA signature on a piece of inauthentic media. \u201cWould it be hard to do?\u201d asks Fast Company. \u201cYes. But it is possible.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The ETH Zurich method avoids that moment of vulnerability since it is the sensor generating the signature, which can then be stored in a publicly accessible, immutable ledger (e.g., a blockchain). <\/p>\n<p>This approach would enable anyone to verify the authenticity of the data in question at any time by comparing the chip\u2019s signature stored in the ledger with the original data and confirming its source. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs such, it is barely of any relevance whether a person or the technology involved in data processing and transmission is trustworthy,\u201d explains Felix Franke, who co-developed the chip at ETH Zurich and is now a professor at the University of Basel. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrust in digital content is eroding.
