President Donald Trump lashed out Monday at NATO allies who did not support the United States in the war in Iran and reiterated his desire to annex Greenland.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s remarks came ahead of a visit by the defense alliance\u2019s chief Mark Rutte scheduled for later this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, we went to NATO,\u201d Trump recalled. \u201cI didn\u2019t ask very strongly, I just said, \u2018Hey, if you want to help, great.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018No, no, no we will not help,’\u201d Trump said he was told, while not saying who he spoke to.<\/p>\n
Trump went on to say that NATO members had \u201cactually gone out of their way not to help.\u201d<\/p>\n
The alliance, Trump said, \u201cis a paper tiger,\u201d that Russian President Vladimir \u201cPutin\u2019s not afraid of.\u201d<\/p>\n
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who Trump called \u201ca great person,\u201d is expected in Washington this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On Wednesday he will hold talks with Trump, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the Alliance said Friday.<\/p>\n
The remarks mark the latest dust-up between Trump and the alliance.<\/p>\n
Trump has made no secret of his desire to annex Greenland \u2014 controlled by NATO ally Denmark \u2014 which has been strongly resisted by the alliance.<\/p>\n
Discussing his displeasure with NATO, Trump said: \u201cIt all began with \u2014 if you want to know the truth \u2014 Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want Greenland,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThey don\u2019t want to give it to us. And I said, \u2018bye, bye.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump also criticized other traditional non-NATO allies including South Korea, Australia, and Japan for not assisting with the Iran war.<\/p>\n
