The discovery was made by divers Fabien Langenegger and Julien Pfyffer from the Octopus Foundation, who investigated a dark spot visible in drone footage. The team conducted excavation campaigns over two weeks in 2025 and for nearly a month in 2026, ultimately retrieving more than one thousand artefacts from the lakebed.<\/p>\n<p>The find is described as a well-preserved cargo, likely from a freight vessel that sank between 20 and 50 AD. One crate was dated to the year 17 AD. While the shipwreck itself remains undiscovered, the recovered items are believed to represent kitchen utensils manufactured in Switzerland for delivery to a Roman camp.<\/p>\n<p>Among the objects were items of military equipment, including two gladiator swords, a dagger, a belt buckle, and a fibula. The archaeological team suggests these pieces indicate that legionaries may have been escorting the shipment. Given the quantity of artefacts found, the cargo could have been intended for a legion of around 6,000 men.<\/p>\n<p>Also discovered was a wicker basket containing six ceramic objects distinct from the main cargo, which researchers interpret as the simpler crockery and provisions belonging to the ship&#8217;s crew. All recovered artefacts are now undergoing cleaning and restoration on land.<\/p>\n<p>The Octopus Foundation plans to release a book and a documentary about the discovery in 2027. An exhibition of the finds is scheduled for the Latenium, Switzerland&#8217;s largest archaeological museum, though a specific date is not yet confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t1.
