{"id":49133,"date":"2026-04-15T09:18:05","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T09:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/49133\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T09:18:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T09:18:05","slug":"violence-escalates-in-dr-congo-as-peace-talks-resume-in-geneva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/49133\/","title":{"rendered":"Violence Escalates in DR Congo as Peace Talks Resume in Geneva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and M23 rebel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/202604150005.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">delegates have met<\/a>\u00a0in Geneva to try to end a war that has devastated the east of the country, as fighting shifts into remote highland areas that are difficult to access and increasingly dangerous, despite repeated ceasefire efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The ninth round of peace talks aims to end the ongoing conflict in the country&#8217;s east. Fighting is currently centred around the eastern provinces of\u00a0North Kivu\u00a0and South Kivu, where the\u00a0M23\u00a0armed group has seized territory and the Congolese army and its allies are trying to push it back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aid\u00a0organisations say they must seek security guarantees from armed groups to access the areas where fighting is taking place, with some refusing to let humanitarian workers pass.<\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/view\/group\/main\/main\/id\/00096034.html\" title=\"UN Warns of Rising Violence and Displacement in DR Congo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/00680195:e8c36bdf651ab47aa46ef645baf9987e:arc180x120:w400:us1.jpg\" alt=\"Eastern DR Congo has seen repeated waves of violence and displacement. Families sheltering at an IDP camp in Ituri province in September 2025.\" width=\"180\" height=\"120\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The United Nations has raised the <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/202603130153.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">alarm<\/a> over escalating violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, warning that civilians in Ituri Province face growing danger and displacement.<\/p>\n<p>UN spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric said humanitarian agencies are &#8220;deeply concerned by the impact of continued violence on civilians&#8221;. Clashes between armed groups in March have killed at least 21 people and forced<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/view\/group\/main\/main\/id\/00096034.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read\u00a0more\u00a0\u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/view\/group\/main\/main\/id\/00091919.html\" title=\"M23 Rebels Seek Peace Talks After Capturing Dr Congo&#039;s Bukavu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/00661233:810bd5c193b5126f651c07166fa361c5:arc180x120:w400:us1.jpg\" alt=\"A woman walks through the Bushagara displacement site with four of her children.\" width=\"180\" height=\"120\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The M23 rebel group has called for direct <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/202502170083.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">peace talks<\/a> with the Congolese government after seizing <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/202502170196.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bukavu<\/a>, the capital of South Kivu Province.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, M23 said its forces entered the city to &#8220;restore security&#8221; and &#8220;assist the population&#8221;, accusing government troops of abandoning their positions after<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/view\/group\/main\/main\/id\/00091919.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read\u00a0more\u00a0\u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>        <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/view\/group\/main\/main\/id\/00094722.html\" title=\"&#039;Little Hope&#039; In DR Congo as Peace Talks Fail to End Fighting\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/00650612:e2c07343f5682cffe63c91cac7bbd83e:arc180x120:w400:us1.jpg\" alt=\"M23 attacks have resulted in the mass displacement of over seven million people.\" width=\"180\" height=\"120\"\/><\/p>\n<p>        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several months have passed since the signing of peace agreements in the U.S. and the Qatari capital, <a href=\"https:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/202511050061.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Doha<\/a>, that were intended to end the conflict in eastern DR Congo between Congolese forces and the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels.
