{"id":52304,"date":"2026-04-20T20:22:59","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T20:22:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/52304\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T20:22:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T20:22:59","slug":"raleigh-staff-provides-glimpse-at-plans-for-old-dmv-headquarters-wral-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/52304\/","title":{"rendered":"Raleigh staff provides glimpse at plans for old DMV headquarters :: WRAL.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Raleigh city staff gave a progress update at what\u2019s coming for the vacant buildings on New Bern Avenue that once held the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The city plans to demolish the two buildings next summer.<\/p>\n<p>On May 20, the Raleigh City Council voted to award a bid for demolition of the former DMV headquarters at 1100 New Bern Ave. The city <a href=\"https:\/\/go.boarddocs.com\/nc\/raleigh\/Board.nsf\/goto?open&amp;id=A4EMF95B00BF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed to pay $1,962,311 to 4 Seasons Demolition, Inc. for the work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city bought the 5.88-acre property on June 24, 2024, for more than $20 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/local\/future-old-dmv-headquarters-raleigh-nov-2024\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after years of negotiations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the city has collected feedback from the community about what neighbors would like to see take its place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re putting back into the community what the community desires and would like to see to help uplift it and move it forward,\u201d said District C City Council Member Corey Branch.<\/p>\n<p>New Bern neighbors expressed strong interest in incorporating affordable housing, healthy food options and a community gathering space. Engagement surveys also reflected a desire to incorporate jobs that would lift small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[We are] making sure we have diverse housing, but also we lost 300 jobs from this corridor, so finding ways to bring jobs in this community,\u201d Branch said.<\/p>\n<p>The site rests in a historically Black neighborhood. Neighbors want to make sure any changes honor and preserve the culture in a way that serves the current community, as opposed to forcing residents out with inflated tax values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like if the city of Raleigh could get possession of a lot of these places, they could use them for people who are really in need instead of corporate greed,\u201d said Ekwon White, who lives near the site.<\/p>\n<p>City staff will now seek groups that can conduct market and design studies, then will present findings to the city council in the fall.
