A Swiss tourist has been rescued after sustaining injuries while hiking in the remote Vikos Gorge, one of Greece\u2019s most rugged natural landscapes.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred near the village of Monodendri, where the woman was trekking as part of a group of nine people. Emergency services were quickly alerted, triggering a large-scale rescue operation on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Air evacuation due to difficult terrain<\/p>\n
Rescuers faced significant challenges due to the mountainous and inaccessible terrain, making it impossible to transport the injured hiker by land. Authorities therefore opted for an air evacuation.<\/p>\n
A helicopter from Greece\u2019s search and rescue coordination center was deployed to the scene, lifting the injured woman from the gorge and transporting her to the helipad of the university hospital in Ioannina.<\/p>\n
