A 56-year-old mother from the West Midlands has ended her life in Switzerland today (Friday, April 24), four years after the death of her only son, the Mirror<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

Wendy Duffy’s death concludes a year-long, meticulously documented plan to seek assisted dying<\/a> in the wake of the loss of Marcus after a choking accident in 2022. A former care worker, Wendy had maintained that her life had become an agonising existence since losing her child.<\/p>\n

Despite attempts at therapy and various treatments, she maintained that she was unable to overcome her grief.<\/p>\n

Prior to her departure, she characterized her decision as a final act of agency<\/a>, stating that she wished to end her life on her own terms rather than resorting to public methods that would inflict trauma on others.<\/p>\n

The procedure was facilitated by the Pegasos clinic in Basel, an organization that has drawn scrutiny for its policy of accepting psychiatric-only cases. This means only individuals without physical or terminal illnesses are allowed to use the facility provided their condition is deemed severe, long-lasting, and treatment-resistant.<\/p>\n

This approach stands in direct contrast to better-known institutions such as Dignitas, which generally decline such requests.<\/p>\n

To qualify for the procedure, Wendy underwent a rigorous, year-long vetting process that involved the remote submission of comprehensive medical records and therapy histories, followed by assessment interviews with a panel of experts and psychiatrists.<\/p>\n

The timing of Ms. Duffy’s death coincides with an ongoing debate regarding assisted dying legislation in the UK.<\/p>\n

As the House of Lords<\/a> runs out of time to debate the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, observers have noted that Wendy\u2019s specific circumstances would not have been covered by the proposed legislation – which is restricted to those with a terminal illness and a life expectancy of less than six months.<\/p>\n

Under the current and proposed UK legal frameworks, her case would have been ineligible for assistance.<\/p>\n

Wendy had spent an estimated \u00a310,000 on the process, which included the clinic fees, medication, and funeral expenses. To protect her family from potential legal scrutiny or police investigation in the UK, she kept the specific timing of her trip private, opting to notify them only after arriving in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Ruedi Habegger, the founder of the Pegasos clinic, issued a statement on Friday confirming that the request was fulfilled.<\/p>\n

“I can confirm that Wendy Duffy, at her own request, was assisted to die on April 24 and that the procedure was completed without incident and in full compliance with her wishes,” Habegger said. “I can also confirm that neither we nor any of the professional staff assessing her mental capacity had any doubt as to her intention, understanding and independence of both thought and action.<\/p>\n

“In historical terms at English law, hers was a case of ‘sane suicide’,” he added.<\/p>\n
