When 56-year-old Wendy Duffy lost her son, Marcus Dolman, her life changed in ways she never expected. Marcus was her only child,<\/a> and when he died, so did a part of Duffy. The mother lost her will to live and attempted to take her own life<\/a> but survived. Though she\u2019s physically well, Duffy is ready to leave her life behind. She will soon travel from her home in the United Kingdom to Switzerland for an approved assisted suicide at Pegasos Swiss Association. Duffy wants to die on her own terms<\/a> and is grateful for the opportunity.<\/p>\n

Marcus\u2019 death changed Duffy completely.<\/p>\n

According to the Daily Mail, Marcus, 23, died after choking on a tomato<\/a> more than four years ago. Losing her only son had a profound impact on Duffy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey think he must have fallen asleep when he still had food in his mouth. That\u2019s the only comfort, that there was no struggle,\u201d Duffy told the news outlet.<\/p>\n

Nine months after Marcus\u2019 death, Duffy attempted suicide by drug overdose and wound up on a ventilator for two weeks. She said no amount of time or therapy will change her mind about wanting to die, and she\u2019s ready for her journey to Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Duffy awaited Pegasos\u2019 approval.<\/p>\n

She explained to Daily Mail that assisted suicide is not legal in the UK but is available in Switzerland. Right-to-die activist Ruedi Habegger founded Pegasos Swiss Association in 2019. Duffy believes it\u2019s the right place for her to live her final moments. She believes the more than $13,000 she\u2019s paid Pegasos to oversee her death is well worth the money.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could step off a motorway bridge or a tower block but that would leave anyone finding me dealing with that for the rest of their lives,\u201d Duffy told Daily Mail.<\/p>\n

Her family knows of her plans.<\/p>\n

Duffy explained that her siblings know she intends to end her life at Pegasos, and she will have one final call with them before her death.<\/p>\n

\u201cPegasos have been in touch with them. I will call them when I get to Switzerland. It will be a hard call where I\u2019ll say goodbye and thank them,\u201d Duffy said, per Daily Mail. \u201cBut they will get it. They know. Honestly, 100 per cent, they know that I\u2019m not happy, that I don\u2019t want to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Duffy, who chose Bruno Mars\u2019 and Lady Gaga\u2019s \u201cDie with a Smile\u201d as her last song, added that she wouldn\u2019t travel if the service was available closer to home. \u201cMy life, my choice. I wish this was available in the UK, then I wouldn\u2019t have to go to Switzerland at all,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n

Duffy\u2019s grief is certainly nothing any parent should ever have to face. Even though ending her life may not be a choice most people would make, she seems confident in her decision.
