Wendy Duffy, 56, unable to cope with the devastating grief of losing her son, was approved for assisted dying at the Pegasos clinic.

Her decision to end her life was a year in the making, during which she paid over $11,000 to the clinic, penned heartfelt letters to her loved ones, selected a deathbed outfit, and chose the music that would be the last she would ever hear.

Her only son, Marcus, passed away four years ago, and no amount of therapy has eased his mother’s pain. She described her life as “agony” without her child, telling the Daily Mail: “I don’t care about anything anymore. I exist. I don’t live. When Marcus died, I died too, inside. On my deathbed, I’ll wear his T-shirt, which still smells of him.

“I won’t change my mind,” she stated in an interview prior to traveling to the clinic. “It will be hard for everyone. But I want to die, and that’s what I’m going to do. And I’ll have a smile on my face when I do, so please be happy for me. My life; my choice.'”

Pegasos is a Swiss assisted dying facility that accepts psychiatric-only cases — where no physical illness is present — provided applicants meet stringent criteria. The condition must be severe, long-lasting, and treatment-resistant.

Pictured: Pegasos Clinic“My heart is broken”: British woman wants to die in SwitzerlandSince the loss of her son, 56-year-old Wendy Duffy has suffered from severe depression. After more than a year of back-and-forth interviews, forms, and the submission of her complete medical records and therapy history — conducted almost entirely remotely via email and WhatsApp, a panel of experts, including psychiatrists, evaluated Wendy’s case and granted approval, reports The Mirror.

Wendy will be cremated in Switzerland, with her ashes returned to her family to be scattered by her son’s bench, as per her wishes.

Her four sisters and two brothers are aware that she applied to Pegasos, but she has been unable to share the timeline with them to spare them additional pain, planning to call them once she arrives in Switzerland.

Anyone who traveled with her or was considered to have assisted her suicide in any way would face the risk of a police investigation.

Pictured: Pegasos Clinic“My heart is broken”: British woman wants to die in SwitzerlandSince the loss of her son, 56-year-old Wendy Duffy has suffered from severe depression. The well-known Dignitas organization in Switzerland would also have turned Wendy away.

Reflecting on her final moments, she said: “My only stipulation is that I’ve asked if they can make sure the big windows are open, so my spirit can be free.”

The former care worker, from West Midlands, says she never got over her son’s death. She desperately attempted to save her only son after he fell asleep and choked on a sandwich, but it was too late. Wendy has previously spoken of her attempts to use antidepressants and therapy to cope with her devastating loss and overwhelming grief. “I wish this was available in the UK, then I wouldn’t have to go to Switzerland at all,” she confided to the publication, disclosing that she had previously attempted to end her own life, only to survive and be placed on a ventilator.

“I could step off a motorway bridge or a tower block but that would leave anyone finding me dealing with that for the rest of their lives,” she continued.

“I’m going to go out to Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars singing Die With A Smile.”

Her passing coincides with the anticipated collapse of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, as the House of Lords is expected to run out of time to deliberate on the proposed legislation.

Pegasos operates as a non-profit organization, given that profiting from assisted death is prohibited under Swiss law. As a result, clients are responsible for covering medication costs, doctors’ fees, and funeral expenses, with a portion directed to the Swiss state.

Marcus DuffyA BRITISH mum is travelling to Switzerland to end her life after losing her son in a tragic accident.Former care worker Wendy Duffy, 56, is travelling from the West Midlands today on a journey to the controversial Pegasos clinic.https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-raise-funds-for-marcuss-funeral (Image: undefined)

The clinic also maintains that its application process for assisted dying is stringent, with a panel of specialists, including psychiatrists, responsible for evaluating each client.

Ruedi Habegger, founder of Pegasos, stated on Friday: “I can confirm that Wendy Duffy, at her own request, was assisted to die on April 24 and that the procedure was completed without incident and in full compliance with her wishes.

“I can also confirm that neither we nor any of the professional staff assessing her mental capacity had any doubt as to her intention, understanding and independence of both thought and action.
