{"id":56831,"date":"2026-04-28T08:34:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T08:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/56831\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T08:34:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T08:34:15","slug":"retailers-could-close-40k-doors-but-footwear-might-be-the-exception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/56831\/","title":{"rendered":"Retailers Could Close 40K Doors, But Footwear Might Be the Exception"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUBS analyst Michael Lasser predicts there will be 40,000-plus U.S. store closures over the next five years, although differentiated players \u2014 including those in footwear \u2014 could beat the trend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe expect digital to prevail as a priority for softlines companies but see stores still playing a big role in consumers\u2019 shopping expereince,\u201d Lasser said. \u201cIn our view, companies best positioned to navigate retail disruption includes with a strong DTC (direc-to-consumer) focus, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/deckers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_deckers\" data-tag=\"deckers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deckers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/on-running\/\" id=\"auto-tag_on-running\" data-tag=\"on-running\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">On Running<\/a> and Ralph Lauren Corp.\u201d He noted that these brands also have \u201chigh pricing power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLasser said that increased store fulfillment options should improve the profitability of e-commerce transations for brands and specialty retailers, while provided the added benefit of potentially limiting the number of store closures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the sporting goods category, sales per store for the trailing 12 months (TTM) were at $2.34 million as of the third quarter of 2025. That figure represents a 1.1 percent decline from year-ago levels, and is not 8 percent below the category\u2019s all time high as of the first quarter of 2022. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOver that period, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/dicks-house-of-sport-jersey-city-store-nyc-area-1238214049\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/dicks-house-of-sport-jersey-city-store-nyc-area-1238214049\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods<\/a>\u2018 market share rose gradually, with sales representing 19 percent to 20 percent of the category between 2017 and 2022, before \u201crising to 21 percent in 2023, 23 percent in 2024, and 24 percent in 2025,\u201d Lasser wrote in a report. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs of the third quarter of 2025, Dick\u2019s TTM sales per store were at $15.7 million, up 0.6 percent year-over-year. As the category leader, Dick\u2019s is well positioned to capture the share left behind by the exit of weaker competitors. (The data points for Dick\u2019s refers to its core Dick\u2019s stores, and doesn\u2019t appear to include the <a data-id=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/dicks-sporting-goods-foot-locker-back-to-school-stores-1238672581\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/dicks-sporting-goods-foot-locker-back-to-school-stores-1238672581\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foot Locker operation<\/a> that was acquired September 2025).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/academy-hyrox-havaianas-flip-flop-consumers-world-cup-1238680692\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/academy-hyrox-havaianas-flip-flop-consumers-world-cup-1238680692\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Academy Sports + Outdoors<\/a>\u2018 penetration has remained \u201crelatively stable\u201d over the past five years at 10 percent to 11 percent. Lasser said Dick\u2019s and Academy are \u201cwell positioned to continue to expand their market share.\u201d Academy\u2019s TTM sales per store reached $29.7 million, with a year-over-year decline of 7.1 percent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile the <a data-id=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/athletic-footwear-wholesale-sales-2025-sporting-goods-sfia-1238872965\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/footwear-news\/shoe-industry-news\/athletic-footwear-wholesale-sales-2025-sporting-goods-sfia-1238872965\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sporting goods sector<\/a> was a major beneficiary of the pandemic as more consumers shifted wallet share toward outdoor activities, the UBS analyst noted that those trends have started \u201cto normalize.\u201d As of the third quarter of 2025, sporting goods retailers generated $57.6 billion in TTM sales, just 7 percent below the all-time high, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe believe downside pressure on the category is limited, as sales have stabilized at elevated levels despite broader pressure on discretionary spending,\u201d he said. \u201cThis resilience likely reflects sports and health activities becoming more embedded in consumers\u2019 daily routines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFootwear is also sold in off-price retailers and in department stores, but the latter is a distribution channel where the footprint has decreased modestly in recent quarters. According to data supplied by Lasser, the TTM sales of department stores as of the third quarter of 2025, totaled nearly $39 billion and fell 4 percent versus year-ago levels. He said further store closures are expected, and could come from Macy\u2019s and JC Penney. Saks and Neiman Marcus are in the process of closing a handful of stores during Saks Global\u2019s Chapter 11 bankruptcy process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe believe continued market share losses \u2014 primarily against off-price retailers and brands\u2019 own DTC channels \u2014 will keep department store sales under pressure,\u201d Lasser said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShoes are also sold at mass merchandisers, such as Walmart, Target and Costco. Their average sales per square foot reached $1.04 billion, or a 5.2 percent CAGR (compound annual growth rate) over the past 10 years. The TTM sales per store at mass merchants were $12.44 million as of the third quarter of 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLasser said that shifting consumer behavior has contributed to the ongoing trend of consolidation as more retailers shut stores. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOnline sales now account for 22 percent of total U.S. retail sales, up from 11 percent in 2019. He said the rise of agentic shopping \u2014 systems that use AI agents to autonomously find products based on user prompts \u2014 will result in higher rates of e-commerce adoption. Because AI agents are \u201cless swayed by splashy marketing campaigns\u201d and other factors such as childhood connections and nostalgia, Lasser said that retailers should \u201cincreasingly be distinguished by the attributes of speed, location, assortment, experience, and price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith the combination of e-commerce and AI-enabled shopping siphoning sales away from physical stores that, in turn, reduce the revenue needed to sustain large store fleets, even retailer with strong onien offerings are learning that they as meet demand with fewer physical locations, leveraging home delivery and curbside pickup. Moreover, shoppers now visit streos more purposefully and less frequently. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShould 40,000 stores close over the next five years, that would reduce the total number of retailer stores in the U.S. to 907,000 by 2030 from 947,000 doors at the end of the third quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOf the various distribution channels in retail, Lasser said small chains and independent retailers face the highest risk.
