{"id":57909,"date":"2026-04-29T21:26:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T21:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/57909\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T21:26:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T21:26:08","slug":"three-years-after-swiss-brought-back-inflight-duty-free-as-a-mark-of-being-a-premium-airline-seat-side-shopping-is-being-jettisoned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/57909\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Years After SWISS Brought Back Inflight Duty Free as a Mark of Being a &#8216;Premium&#8217; Airline, Seat-Side Shopping is Being Jettisoned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just three and a half years after SWISS International Air Lines brought back the inflight Duty Free cart as mark of it being a \u201cpremium\u201d full-service carrier, the opportunity to flick through a dog earred shopping brochure will soon be coming to an end\u2026 and this time, it will be for good.<\/p>\n<p>Like many airlines, SWISS first jettisoned inflight Duty Free at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as a desperate measure to reduce contact between flight attendants and passengers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/shutterstock_2385081717-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"a plane flying in the sky\" class=\"wp-image-25239\"  \/>SWISS International Air Lines suggested that having Duty Free onboard flights was a mark of a \u2018premium\u2019 full-service carrier.<\/p>\n<p>It would take SWISS two and half years to being back the Duty Free cart, although the decision to reintroduce the familiar inflight moment flew in the face of decisions of many other airlines that decided inflight Duty Free was no longer worth the hassle.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining its decision, though, Chief Commercial Officer Tamur Goudarzi Pour, said bringing back Duty Free was a \u201ca further major step back to our full premium service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/KLM-770x512.jpg\" alt=\"KLM to Stop All In-Flight Duty Free Shopping as of January 2020\" class=\"wp-image-12149\"  \/>Many other European airlines have already ditched inflight Duty Free sales, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paddleyourownkanoo.com\/2019\/03\/11\/klm-to-stop-all-in-flight-duty-free-shopping-as-of-january-2020\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KLM Royal Dutch Airlines<\/a>, which abandoned the practice in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, fast forward to now, and SWISS has decided that inflight Duty Free is no longer needed to stand out at a premium carrier.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of September, SWISS will remove the last Duty Free carts from its planes, ending a favorite tradition among flyers.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining its decision, a spokesperson for SWISS said the airline had carefully analyzed onboard sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result is clear: fewer and fewer guests are making purchases in-flight,\u201d the airline said. \u201cMore and more passengers now research products at home, compare prices online, and make their purchases before they even arrive at the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement added: \u201cThe spontaneous purchase from the onboard duty-free trolley has become the exception \u2013 no longer the rule. SWISS is drawing the consequences and will discontinue in-flight duty-free sales at the end of September 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/shutterstock_1672159645-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"a large airplane in the sky\" class=\"wp-image-25886\"  \/>British Airways is bucking the industry trend by rolling out Duty Free across its long-haul network, after a lengthy trial.<\/p>\n<p>Although SWISS plans to discontinue Duty Free sales at the end of September 2026, the airline will start drawing down its stock from June, meaning that some items might be put on special offer to ensure SWISS can clear out its warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Following the end of in-flight Duty Free, a selection of goods will still be available to buy online via the Miles &amp; More \u2018Worldshop.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"815\" height=\"541\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/emirates_cabin_crew.jpg\" alt=\"a woman wearing a red hat and white scarf\" class=\"wp-image-14492\"  \/>Emirates is another increasingly rare airline that continues to embrace in-flight Duty Free<\/p>\n<p>SWISS certainly isn\u2019t alone in ending in-flight Duty Free shopping, with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, SAS, and Finnair all ending the practice since 2020.  Last year, German flag carrier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paddleyourownkanoo.com\/2025\/04\/30\/lufthansa-ditches-duty-free-carts-as-cabin-space-becomes-premium-real-estate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lufthansa<\/a> also ended inflight Duty Free sales after deciding that it needed the space taken up by shopping carts for other items.<\/p>\n<p>Some airlines have, though, recommitted to the increasingly rare chance to shop at 38,000 feet.
