{"id":58830,"date":"2026-05-01T19:32:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T19:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/58830\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T19:32:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T19:32:18","slug":"iran-soccer-officials-to-meet-fifa-in-zurich-and-plan-for-world-cup-games-in-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/58830\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran soccer officials to meet FIFA in Zurich and plan for World Cup games in US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">GENEVA (AP) \u2014 Iranian soccer officials are set to meet soon with FIFA in Zurich about their World Cup games in the United States in June.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Iran\u2019s top soccer official Mehdi Taj said on Friday \u201cwe have many issues to discuss\u201d on his return home from Canada where he failed to attend FIFA\u2019s annual congress held on Thursday in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstr\u00f6m has invited an Iranian delegation to its headquarters by a May 20 deadline, a person familiar with the proposal told The Associated Press on Friday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing sensitivity of the issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">That target date in Zurich is three weeks before the Iran squad is due in the U.S., staying at a training base in Tucson, Arizona, to prepare for three group games in Inglewood, California and Seattle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cOur position is that we will soon have a meeting with FIFA,\u201d Taj told Iranian media on Friday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Iran is an Asian soccer power but its ability and willingness to come to the World Cup has been questioned since the U.S. and Israel launched military attacks on Feb. 28. The tournament is being co-hosted by Canada and Mexico,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">On Thursday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino opened his keynote speech to global soccer leaders \u2014 with only Iran missing of the 211 member federations \u2014 insisting again that Iran will come and play as scheduled in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">At the White House later Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed his support for Iran\u2019s team, adding: \u201cIf Gianni said it, I\u2019m OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Trump and Infantino have closely allied over the World Cup preparations which has challenges, beyond Iran with fans from several African countries, over granting entry visas and security concerns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Taj and two more Iran officials had issues this week on landing in Toronto en route to Vancouver where they were expected at the FIFA annual meeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Taj, who is also a vice president of Asia\u2019s soccer body, detailed on Friday the problems with Canadian authorities though he said he was not deported.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cIn Canada they asked us, \u2018Are you members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps?\u2019 We told them, \u2018In Iran, 90 million of us are IRGC,\u2019\u201d Taj was reported as saying in Iranian media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">After being detained for two hours at Toronto airport, the Iran soccer delegation which had arrived from Istanbul was told it could continue the journey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cThere was some discussion and he said, \u2018It\u2019s up to you,\u2019 and then we decided as a group to go back\u201d to Istanbul, Taj said. \u201cThey did not officially deport us, there is nothing labeled as deportation in our file, but in practice it was like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Taj had a valid visa to enter Canada after he was denied one by the U.S. to attend the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 5. At that event, Infantino presented Trump with the first FIFA Peace Prize.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Iran has World Cup group games against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt, respectively, from June 15-26. The first two games are at the NFL stadium of the Los Angeles Rams and the third is at the Seattle Seahawks\u2019 stadium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">If Iran advances as runner-up in its group, the team could face the United States in the round of 32 at the Dallas Cowboys\u2019 stadium on July 3.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">The Iranian soccer league shut down after the war started and is not due to resume before the World Cup. (Darryl Dyck\/The Canadian Press via AP)<\/p>\n<p>      <\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">PARIS (AP) \u2014 Activists worldwide held May Day rallies and street protests Friday, calling for peace, higher wages and better working conditions as many workers grapple with rising energy costs and shrinking purchasing power tied to the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">May 1 is a public holiday in many countries to mark International Workers\u2019 Day, or Labor Day, when workers\u2019 unions traditionally rally around wages, pensions, inequality and broader political issues. Demonstrations were held from Seoul, Sydney and Jakarta to many European capitals. In the U.S., activists opposing President Donald Trump\u2019s policies also were holding marches and boycotts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cWorking people refuse to pay the price for Donald Trump\u2019s war in the Middle East,\u201d the European Trade Union Confederation, which represents 93 trade union organizations in 41 European countries, said. \u201cToday\u2019s rallies show working people will not stand by and see their jobs and living standards destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">What to know about May Day: <\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Rising living costs linked to the conflict in the Middle East emerged as a key theme in Friday\u2019s rallies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">In the Philippine capital, Manila, large crowds denounced the U.S. role in the Iran war. Protesters clashed with police blocking the way near the U.S. Embassy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto joined a rally in Jakarta where workers called for stronger government protection from rising prices and difficulties in finding raw materials for key industries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">On a main avenue in Casablanca, Morocco\u2019s largest city, taxi drivers honked their horns and bus drivers parked their vehicles to protest rising fuel costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cAll my expenses have gone up, but my wages haven\u2019t budged,\u201d Akherraz Lhachimi of the Moroccan Labor Union said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Turkish authorities in Istanbul detained hundreds of demonstrators for attempting to march in areas declared off-limits on security grounds, most notably central Taksim Square, the epicenter of 2013 protests. May Day rallies in Turkey are frequently marred by clashes with authorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Tens of thousands of people crowded into a public square across from the U.S. Embassy in Havana, celebrating Cuba&#8217;s workers and decrying U.S. sanctions. Many held banners that read, \u201cDown with Imperialism\u201d and \u201cU.S. hands off Cuba.\u201d President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel and former President Ra\u00fal Castro attended the event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Several rallies were staged in South Africa, where the head of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Zingiswa Losi, said workers were \u201csuffocating\u201d under rising costs of food, electricity, transport and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">May Day carries special meaning this year in France, after a heated debate about whether employees should be allowed to work on the country\u2019s most protected public holiday \u2014 the only day when most employees have a mandatory paid day off. <\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Almost all businesses, shops and malls are closed, and only essential sectors such as hospitals, transport and hotels are exempt. A recent parliamentary proposal to expand work on the day prompted major outcry from unions and left-leaning politicians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cDon\u2019t touch May Day,\u201d unions said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Tens of thousands of people joined marches across the country, including in Paris, where brief scuffles with police broke out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">\u201cMay 1 is not just any day,\u201d Small and Medium-sized Businesses Minister Serge Papin said. \u201cIt symbolizes social gains stemming from a century of building social rules that have led to the labor code we know in France. It is indeed a special day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">In the United States, where May Day is not a federal holiday, May Day Strong, a coalition of activist groups and labor unions, called on people to protest under the banner of \u201cworkers over billionaires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Voicing strong opposition to Trump&#8217;s policies, organizers listed thousands of May Day actions across the country and called for an economic blackout through \u201cno school, no work, no shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Demands include taxing the rich and putting an end to the Trump administration\u2019s immigration crackdown. <\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">While labor and immigrant rights are historically intertwined, the focus of May Day rallies in the U.S. shifted to immigration in 2006. That\u2019s when roughly 1 million people, including nearly half a million in Chicago alone, took to the streets to protest federal legislation that would have made living in the U.S. without legal permission a felony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">May Day, or International Workers\u2019 Day, traces back more than a century to a pivotal period in U.S. labor history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">In the 1880s, unions pushed for an eight-hour workday. A Chicago rally in May 1886 turned deadly when a bomb exploded and police responded with gunfire. Several labor activists \u2014 most of them immigrants \u2014 were convicted of conspiracy and other charges; four were executed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"font-size-scaler-control\" data-font=\"16\">Unions later designated May 1 to honor workers.
