{"id":58847,"date":"2026-05-01T21:07:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T21:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/58847\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T21:07:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T21:07:09","slug":"poll-shows-most-citizens-support-a-10-million-population-cap-in-switzerland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/58847\/","title":{"rendered":"Poll shows most citizens support a 10 million population cap in Switzerland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About half of Switzerland&#8217;s residents are considering voting for a controversial ballot measure that would cap the nation&#8217;s population at 10 million people.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Tamedia opinion poll, which surveyed more than 16,000 Swiss residents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/world\/articles\/2026-04-29\/most-swiss-back-initiative-to-cap-population-at-10-million-poll-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">52% <\/a>support a referendum proposal to curb immigration and control the size of the population. Meanwhile, 46% of those surveyed oppose the measure. The newspaper that published the poll did note that referendum proposals often lose steam as the actual voting day approaches.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal is being backed by the nation&#8217;s right-wing Swiss People&#8217;s Party, known as the SVP, which <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/04\/30\/switzerland-population-cap-immigration-referendum-european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claims<\/a> that it&#8217;s needed to deal with &#8220;uncontrolled immigration&#8221; and its impacts on infrastructure and housing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If passed, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/most-swiss-back-initiative-cap-population-10-million-poll-shows-2026-04-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">proposal<\/a> would limit permanent residents in the country to 10 million before 2050, and also withdraw from its freedom of movement deal with the EU. It would also be the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/04\/30\/switzerland-population-cap-immigration-referendum-european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first limit of its kind<\/a> for a government to have officially enacted into law.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/world-population\/switzerland-population\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Switzerland<\/a> currently has a population of around 9 million people, which has grown from 7.1 million people since 2000; the population growth over these last 26 years has primarily come through immigration, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/04\/30\/switzerland-population-cap-immigration-referendum-european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">per<\/a> Time.<\/p>\n<p>The current Swiss government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/most-swiss-back-initiative-cap-population-10-million-poll-shows-2026-04-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">opposes<\/a> the initiative, which will be voted on June 14, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/swiss-government-slams-10-million-population-cap-plan-threat-economy-2026-03-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">arguing<\/a> that it would negatively impact the economy by harming the Swiss labor market and weaken ties with the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>             &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n\t                         &#13;<br \/>\n                  &#13;<br \/>\n                    &#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n                      &#13;<br \/>\n                      &#13;<br \/>\n                      <a href=\"https:\/\/links.thecooldown.com\/merino-energy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/merino.jpeg\" width=\"560\" height=\"400\" style=\"display:block;width:100%;height:auto;\"\/><\/a>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#360499;text-decoration:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/links.thecooldown.com\/merino-energy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Merino Mono<\/a> is a heating and cooling system designed for the rooms traditional HVAC can&#8217;t reach.
