The motors are also designed for operation with ABB frequency converter drivers, enabling optimised system configurations and flexible integration into modern electrification architectures.<\/p>\n<p>Permanent magnet motors are recognised as a core technology for next-generation vessels, enabling higher efficiency, reduced noise, and improved manoeuvrability \u2014 especially for tugboats, offshore support vessels, ferries, and hybrid ships.<\/p>\n<p>ABB\u2019s new motor delivers efficiency up to 98%, torque density, and reduced losses across the full operating range. The company notes this efficiency translates directly into lower energy consumption, reduced fuel or battery use, and avoided CO2 emissions over the equipment\u2019s lifecycle.<\/p>\n<p>The motor\u2019s water-jacket cooling system, combined with an optimised mechanical structure, provides thermal performance without requiring external fan units or top coolers. This allows customers to benefit from up to 60% reduction in mounting volume, 30\u201340% lower vertical height, and 5\u201315% lower weight compared with conventional alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Decarbonisation and capabilities<\/p>\n<p>Business line manager for motors and generators Tatu J\u00e4rvenp\u00e4\u00e4 says across many industries, ABB\u2019s customers are working to decarbonise, improve energy performance, and fit more capability into tighter spaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new permanent magnet series combined ABB\u2019s latest advances in magnet technology, cooling innovation, and engineering to deliver more power in less space \u2014 with the reliability and lifecycle performance the industry expects from ABB,\u201d J\u00e4rvenp\u00e4\u00e4 says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy pairing our new permanent magnet motors with ABB drives, customers gain a seamlessly engineered engine backed by ABB\u2019s global service network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The motor series is available for numerous industrial variable-speed applications, including geared and direct-drive configurations. Currently offered in frame sizes 500 and 710, with power ratings up to five megawatts, larger frame sizes are feasible and can be supported. <\/p>\n<p>ABB is focused on accelerating a more productive and sustainable future.
