According to local media, the men, aged 22 and 30, contacted local police for help. Nagano authorities dispatched a helicopter for rescue early on May 5, but the mission was hampered by severe weather conditions. Both men were rescued by 3 p.m. the same day; the 30-year-old was conscious upon being taken to the hospital, while the 22-year-old was confirmed dead.

Mountaineering expert Chung Kin-man commented on a radio program on the morning of May 6, expressing regret over the accident. He noted that although the Hida Mountains are considered of “intermediate” climbing difficulty, the real risk depends on environmental and weather conditions rather than the mountain itself. He said, “A seemingly easy terrain can instantly become extremely dangerous if the weather suddenly changes or the temperature drops sharply.”

Chung explained that May, at the transition from spring to summer, is considered a “seasonal crossover” for climbing, outside the traditional summer peak season (July to September). The weather in May is highly unstable, with sudden cold snaps and windstorms possible. While it is not impossible to climb in May, it is undeniably a risky period.

He emphasized that climbers who prepare only with summer-standard gear, such as clothing or ropes, may find themselves ill-equipped in severe weather, risking hypothermia or injury. In icy or snowy conditions, rope performance is critical, and waterproof ropes are strongly recommended over non-waterproof types.

Regarding emergency responses on the mountain, Chung noted that no approach can guarantee complete safety. Climbing inherently carries unpredictable risks, including sudden weather changes, fatigue, or falling rocks. He advised climbers to prepare thoroughly, carry sufficient or extra provisions, and review each climb afterward to learn from experience and improve safety measures.

Related News:

HK lift technician killed in Stanley industrial accident, investigation urged

          Tag:·Hida Mountains· Japanese Northern Alps· Hong Kong climbers· mountaineering safety· Chung Kin-man

Two Hong Kong men were trapped while descending along a rope in Japan’s Hida Mountains, also known as the…

[16
50,33565,33561,33563,33562,33564
0":"post-60734","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-alps","8":"tag-alps","9":"tag-chung-kin-man","10":"tag-hida-mountains","11":"tag-hong-kong-climbers","12":"tag-japanese-northern-alps","13":"tag-mountaineering-safety
["GET
