After World War II he fled to South America, and later visited Switzerland as a tourist. Several Swiss parliamentarians filed petitions to determine details of the war criminal’s stay in the country.

The Bergier Commission, established by the government in 1996 to investigate how banks treated the families of Holocaust victims and their assets, examined the case. However, in December 2001 the Swiss government decided to limit access to the case materials.

The documents were transferred to the Swiss Federal Archives. Because of the restrictions, the FIS had rejected requests to view the Mengele case, most recently in February 2026.

However, the FIS changed its position after an appeal to the Federal Administrative Court: the appellant will gain access to the case materials under terms and procedures that have not yet been defined and that will also apply in the future.

Reaction and consequences

The Auschwitz International Committee welcomed the FIS decision and thanked Gérard Wettstein for his involvement in reviewing the situation.

In the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, more than a million people were killed, predominantly Jews.

According to the National Archives of Argentina (AGN), 1,850 declassified documents have been released detailing the activities of Nazi fugitives who found refuge in the country after World War II. Josef Mengele is also mentioned among the declassified materials.

These materials underscore the importance of archival transparency and thorough investigations into the roles of different states during the Holocaust.

A court appeal overturned prior restrictions, paving the way for researchers to examine records that could reveal new…

[4
33609,33610,33611,33612,33608,1202,41,33613,17
post-60924","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-switzerland","tag-archival-transparency","tag-auschwitz-archives","tag-federal-administrative-court","tag-josef-mengele","tag-josef-mengele-swiss-intelligence-auschwitz-archives-federal-administrative-court-archival-transparency","tag-news","tag-swiss","tag-swiss-intelligence","tag-switzerland
["GET
