NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – A few crosswalks in downtown New Bern will close throughout several weeks as part of a construction project.<\/p>\n
The crosswalk improvement project will include crosswalks at Hancock Street and Pollock Street, Craven Street and Pollock Street, and Middle Street and S. Front Street.<\/p>\n
Hancock St. and Pollock St. will be the first intersection to close, beginning today.<\/p>\n
A new crosswalk will be installed only on the east side of the intersection.<\/p>\n
Crews will remove the asphalt and excavate beneath the current sidewalks so they can install new concrete bases.<\/p>\n
They will also place new brick pavers on the crosswalk surfaces.<\/p>\n
New Bern officials say the construction on each intersection will take about two to three weeks to complete. <\/p>\n
The intersections will close one at a time. <\/p>\n
All four crosswalks at Craven St. and Pollock St. will be getting an upgrade. That work will start once the Hancock St. and Pollock St. work is complete. <\/p>\n
The final intersection to close will be at Middle St. and S. Front St. All four crosswalks will be replaced. Work will start once the intersection at Hancock St. and Pollock St. reopens.<\/p>\n
Any parking lots near the intersections will likely be reserved for equipment that will be used during the project. <\/p>\n
Officials hope all intersections will be replaced in the next eight weeks. <\/p>\n
The project was recommended and is being funded by the Municipal Service District Advisory Committee. <\/p>\n
