Marking 90 years of activity, leaders and representatives from more than 100 countries expressed deep concern over the rise of antisemitism worldwide, which guided the discussions at the gathering.

Jack Terpins, president of the Latin American Jewish Congress, emphasized that meetings like this serve to inspire leadership in decision-making and allow concerns to be shared with political authorities and security agencies. “This is an extremely sensitive and relevant issue for us, Jews, but also for other minorities, since hatred directed at one group can quickly spread to others,” he said.

Reaffirming the commitment to protecting Jewish life and confronting antisemitism in all its forms, 32 special envoys and coordinators for combating antisemitism — from more than two dozen countries and international organizations — issued a joint declaration. Among them was Brazilian Fernando Lottenberg, Commissioner for Monitoring and Combating Antisemitism at the OAS. Lottenberg noted: “We heard different points of view, exchanged experiences. Even though incidents have decreased compared to 2023, we still face a high number of occurrences.”

The document warns that antisemitism has ceased to be an isolated phenomenon and has become a growing global threat, affecting not only Jewish communities but also democratic values and the foundations of free societies. The signatories called for strengthening the security of Jewish communities, holding perpetrators accountable, expanding Holocaust education, and coordinating international initiatives to combat the spread of antisemitic hatred both online and offline.

The declaration underscores that, despite political differences and distinct national approaches, democratic nations remain united in the understanding that antisemitism cannot be tolerated — anywhere, anytime, under any pretext. It was issued in Geneva during the meeting of the Special Envoys and Coordinators for Combating Antisemitism (SECCA).

Brazil was also represented by Chella Safra, chair of the World Jewish Congress, and Claudio Lottenberg, president of the Brazilian Israelite Confederation (CONIB) and commissioner for Combating Antisemitism at the World Jewish Congress. Lottenberg, invited by the Latin American Jewish Congress, stated: “This was a high-level meeting that shows the importance of combating antisemitism within community structures, with organizations that embrace the fight for human rights in a multilateral and interinstitutional way.”

Also participating were CONIB’s executive directors Sergio Napchan and Claudio Epelman of the Latin American Jewish Congress.

Source: Silvia Perlov

Silas Anastácio is a columnist for Guiame, the largest evangelical media outlet in Brazil, as well as JM Notícia and Jornal da Cidade Online.
