By the standards of a week that immediately precedes a Grand Slam, this upcoming one is stacked \u2014 even without Alexander Zverev in Hamburg and Novak Djokovic in Geneva. Zverev withdrew from the Hamburg ATP 500, citing a back injury \u2014 but it\u2019s likely just a precautionary move in advance of the French Open. Djokovic decided not to play the Geneva ATP 250, meaning he heads to Roland Garros with only one clay-court match under his belt.<\/p>\n

Despite those two absences, among the players taking the court this week are Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur, Flavio Cobolli, Tommy Paul, Jakub Mensik, Taylor Fritz, Alexander Bublik, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Stan Wawrinka.

Paul, however, already has an all-American showdown on his hands with Ethan Quinn in round one. The bottom half of the Hamburg bracket also includes De Minaur, Luciano Darderi, Francisco Cerundolo, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. You have to think that Darderi will either withdraw or lose early after making a run to the Rome semifinals.<\/p>\n

The top half presents a similarly daunting path to the final for all of Hamburg\u2019s top contenders. Cobolli could run into Mensik in round two, with the winner likely to face Karen Khachanov in the quarters. Auger-Aliassime, the top seed, will kick off his week against an in-form Vit Kopriva before possibly meeting Frances Tiafoe in the last eight.<\/p>\n

The seventh-ranked American\u2019s opening match will probably come against Alexei Popyrin, who is starting to pick up some much-needed wins and generally fares well on clay. Casper Ruud is a possible quarterfinal foe for Fritz or Popyrin, but the Norwegian has no reason to play this week after reaching the Rome final. The top half of the Geneva draw is also home to Cameron Norrie, Jaume Munar, and Mariano Navone.<\/p>\n

With Fritz a question mark and Ruud unlikely to play, the bottom half of the bracket looks considerably tougher. Joining Bublik is Learner Tien, Alejandro Tabilo, and an extremely deep crop of unseeded players that features Tsitsipas, Wawrinka, Alex Michelsen, Sebastian Baez, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, and Thiago Agustin Tirante. Tsitsipas vs. Mpetshi Perricard is a first-round battle, while Wawrinka begins his final appearance in front of the home crowd against Tabilo.<\/p>\n
