(WITN) &#8211; The first phase to improve a busy intersection in New Bern gets underway today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The North Carolina Department of Transportation says work is beginning around Dr. MLK Jr. Boulevard (US 70 Business and US 17) at Hotel Drive today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The first phase requires crews to close the left lanes in both directions of Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd so they can widen the left turn lanes onto Hotel Dr. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officials say the work will take about two weeks to complete, weather permitting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The left lanes will reopen once work is done, but other closures will be coming throughout the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Other improvements will include drainage, pacing, and signal and pedestrian accommodations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Drivers are asked to use caution when traveling through the work zones and find alternative routes to avoid delays. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Real-time travel information can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/DriveNC.gov\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/DriveNC.gov\" target=\"_blank\">DriveNC.gov<\/a> or on the NCDOT\u2019s social media pages. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WITN.
