BERN, May 21 (Reuters) – Switzerland values UBS as a major bank but also has to limit \u200cthe dangers, Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter said \u200con Thursday, adding that taxpayers are not willing to accept the \u200brisk of another financial crisis or bank bailout.<\/p>\n
Proposed changes for UBS to hold more capital were vital to support the stability of the Swiss banking sector, she \u200csaid, adding this \u2060was “indispensable” for it as a financial centre.<\/p>\n
“The population, the economy \u2014 everyone here in the \u2060room \u2014 may expect the government to make every possible effort to ensure a secure, stable framework,” Keller-Sutter said.<\/p>\n
“It \u200bis clear \u200bthat all those who \u200bbenefit from this stability \u200ctoday, but could also endanger it tomorrow, must contribute to maintaining it,” she told a private banking event in Bern.<\/p>\n
Philipp Hildebrand, Vice Chairman of BlackRock, which is a shareholder in UBS, echoed the finance minister’s \u200ccomments.<\/p>\n
“It may be that in times \u200bof an absolute boom it \u200bis somewhat more \u200bcomplicated if one has to hold more \u200ccapital. But you all know \u200bthat when \u200bthings really become unstable, it once again becomes an advantage. And I believe shareholders understand that \u200bas well in \u200cthese times,” Hildebrand said at the event.<\/p>\n
