What do students themselves think of the Student Project House experience?
One student described his time at the Student Project House by saying: \u201cI learned to never stop learning\u201d. He had discovered that he was capable of continually growing his knowledge. When you consider how fast AI is evolving, that\u2019s an enormously important skill. We need to show students how to keep teaching themselves new things if they want to keep up with the pace of change. And there\u2019s something else too\u2026<\/p>\n
And what would that be?
Our students learn to keep going after they make mistakes. They build resilience. Given all the global crises we are living through, that\u2019s extremely important.<\/p>\n
What do students need in order to find the courage to try new things?
They need the right location and to be around like-minded people. Our workshop and the possibilities here are inspiring in their own right. It\u2019s also equally important to be around others who are also working on their own ideas and to gain a sense of distance from everyday academic life, where the next exam or paper is always looming.<\/p>\n
ETH Zurich\u2019s idea is catching on: this coming autumn, a new Student Project House is due to open at the University of St Gallen. What do the two institutions hope to gain from this partnership?
That students will learn even more from one another. We believe it\u2019s beneficial for tech-focused students and business-focused students to work together. We know from interviews that our users are interested in this.<\/p>\n
What has not worked as hoped over the past decade?
Quite a few things, actually. For instance, we still fail to reach enough women. At ETH Zurich, women make up 34 per cent of the student body, but only 21 per cent of the users at the Student Project House. We\u2019re now trying to adapt our programme and our communications.<\/p>\n
What idea is the Student Project House going to try out next?
We are working on a number of projects, including a digital and AI makerspace, so a place where hardware and software are available for digital projects. This will also include access to language models and perhaps a robotic arm as well.
