A young Geneva team reached the Class C final on Saturday. A program in the middle of a dynasty made sure that was where the run ended.<\/p>\n
Top-seeded Honeoye Falls-Lima scored the game’s first eight goals, led 12-1 at the half and pulled away to a 16-6 win over the second-seeded Panthers at St. John Fisher University, claiming its fourth straight Section V title, the longest active streak in the section.<\/p>\n
Geneva coach Jeff Dunham was not interested in the scoreboard afterward. He kept returning to what his team had been through and what it would carry into next season.<\/p>\n
“I’m incredibly proud of them,” Dunham said. “We’ve gone through a lot of adversity. We lost a couple starters to injuries, had different guys stepping up. With a lot of young guys on this team, they stepped up throughout the game today.”<\/p>\n
Geneva never found a rhythm against an HFL defense that choked off its path up the field. Dunham said the Panthers needed all three phases of the game working at once and never got there, which left them with few clean looks. The ones they earned, they finished.<\/p>\n
Ryland Dunham, a senior, led Geneva with two goals and an assist. His cousin, Jack Dunham, who is coach Dunham’s son, added a goal and an assist. Eighth grader Dominic Gaglianese scored twice and battled in the faceoff x, defenseman Gianni Velazquez scored, and Jacob D’Amico set up a pair of goals. Ryland Dunham, Jack Dunham and Gaglianese were each named to the Class C All-Tournament Team.<\/p>\n
For Dunham, the value of the afternoon is what can be taken forward into next season.<\/p>\n
“I think this experience matters. Experience is what matters,” he said. “There were definitely some guys today who had a hard time early with the moment, which is natural. The more experience you get in those situations, the better they’ll be.”<\/p>\n
He expects the climb to continue with a roster he calls young and hungry.<\/p>\n
