{"id":7599,"date":"2026-02-15T14:02:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T14:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/7599\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T14:02:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T14:02:20","slug":"ken-harper-returns-to-new-bern-this-time-for-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/7599\/","title":{"rendered":"Ken Harper returns to New Bern&#8211;this time for good"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">Ken Harper is back.&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">That name may not be familiar to you, but it will be if he has any say in it.&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">Harper, then a High Point resident, was an underdog candidate for US Senate in 2021, an African American Republican trying to replace the retiring Richard Burr in the 2022 race. He had much to overcome, both as a black man standing for a Republican cause and as a man facing overwhelming war chests by those running against him: his opponents, Mark Walker, Ted Budd and Pat McCrory each had more than $1 million dollars backing their races.&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">He lost (Ted Budd went on to win the seat). But Harper didn\u2019t give up his love of serving his community while he built up his business, Harpco Benefits Alliance. His business, he says, &#8220;is bout financial literacy, educating the public about life insurance, business planning.\u201d&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">His emphasis, he says, is working with youth and educating them about opportunities and, &#8220;Also the importance of being good citizens.\u201d&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">This past May Harper came back to New Bern for good, leaving his High Point home and setting up shop at 242 Middle Street. &#8220;I fell in love with New Bern,\u201d he said. &#8220;I moved back here with my wife (Sarah Lyne). I wanted to give back to New Bern because New Bern has been so good to me.\u201d&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">He got involved in public activism right away, setting up a &#8220;Get Storm Ready\u201d <a href=\" https:\/\/newbernlive.org\/local-event-raises-hurricane-preparedness-p6149-174.htm\">event<\/a> at the Flame that featured both state and local leaders from government to law enforcement who spoke to attendees about how the state and county prepare for hurricanes\u2014and how residents can as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">It\u2019s only the start of what he wants to do.&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">&#8220;New Bern is a great place, but every place can get better,\u201d he says. &#8220;My heart is working for the youth, but I really want to help young African American men who may need mentors and show them a great example of the opportunities that can exist for them. That is very dear to my heart. I want to make sure they have futures and not felonies.\u201d&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">I interviewed Harper in October of <a href=\" https:\/\/newbernlive.org\/senate-candidate-ken-harper-wants-to-bring-the-gop-back-to-its-roots-p963-174.htm\">2021<\/a> while he was campaigning in New Bern and was impressed by both his humility and his cause. We spoke at an outside table Bella\u2019s on Middle Street at the time. A former Democrat, he was still active with his former associates\u2014for one, he was on Jesse Jackson\u2019s Rainbow Coalition Board.&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">He came across as plain-spoken and thoughtful. He told me he was raised with &#8220;really conservative, Christian people,\u201d but that didn\u2019t keep him out of trouble. &#8220;As a youth, my senior year in has I was an honor roll student,\u201d he said. &#8220;I came from a two-parent home. However I was hanging with the wrong kind of people and my career got derailed.\u201d He had a pregnant girlfriend and was arrested on various charges shortly before his graduation. He was given a break on a first offender\u2019s program and turned himself around.&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">When I interviewed him recently at Crema Brew, it was easy to recognize him as the man I\u2019d met four years before. He has matured, perhaps, but he hasn\u2019t significantly changed.&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">Along with youth \u2013 &#8220;I see many youth walking around here lost,\u201d he comments \u2013 Harper also plans to employ his interests in history (which is one thing that drew him to our town) and theater. He has already written and directed a play, &#8220;Crossroads,\u201d which examines the subject of domestic violence and food insecurity. Also, &#8220;I will be working with some of the local organizations on black history. New Bern needs a black history museum.\u201d&#13;\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\" style=\"margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif;\">Harper says he has always spread his message of hope in schools, prisons and churches.
