{"id":764,"date":"2026-02-11T14:56:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T14:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/764\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T14:56:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T14:56:20","slug":"rio-tinto-backs-out-of-260bn-glencore-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/764\/","title":{"rendered":"Rio Tinto backs out of $260bn Glencore merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Rio Tinto<\/a> is no longer considering a $260bn merger with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glencore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Glencore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Talks of this potential all-share merger between Rio Tinto and Glencore were taking place early January.<\/p>\n<p>The decision comes after Rio Tinto determined it could not reach an agreement that would deliver value to its shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>Rio Tinto assessed the opportunity and came to this view through the disciplined lens set out at its Capital Markets Day in December 2025 \u2013 prioritising long-term value and delivering leading shareholder returns.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued by Glencore, the key terms of the potential offer were Rio Tinto retaining both the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer roles and delivering a proforma ownership of the combined company.<\/p>\n<p>In Glencore\u2019s view, this significantly undervalued the company\u2019s contribution to the combined group, even before consideration of a suitable acquisition control premium. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rio Tinto is no longer considering a $260bn merger with Glencore.
