ZURICH, June 5 (Reuters) – Switzerland will continue trade talks with the United States while \u200crejecting allegations that it failed to \u200ccombat imports of goods made with forced labour, the \u200bgovernment said on Friday.<\/p>\n
The government said it would restate its position in writing, arguing its approach focusing on supply chains was effective, as \u200cWashington considers additional \u2060tariffs of 12.5% on Switzerland.<\/p>\n
“The Federal Council strongly rejects the allegations made \u2060in the course of this investigation,” the government said, adding that Switzerland’s approach combines regulation, \u200bmandatory private-sector \u200brisk assessments and \u200binternational cooperation.<\/p>\n
The U.S. findings, \u200cpublished on June 2, followed Section 301 investigations launched in March into alleged unfair trade practices, including industrial overcapacity and enforcement against forced labour goods.<\/p>\n
The proposed tariffs would not take \u200ceffect immediately, with interested \u200bparties first invited to submit \u200bcomments ahead \u200bof a public hearing.<\/p>\n
The additional U.S. \u200ctariffs are likely to replace \u200bthe current \u200b10% additional tariffs that are in force until July 24, the government said, while \u200badditional tariffs \u200cmay be imposed because of a U.S. \u200binvestigation into overcapacity.<\/p>\n
