(Bloomberg) \u2014 Roche Holding AG agreed to pay Nurix Therapeutics Inc. as much as $2.3 billion for rights to an experimental blood-cancer drug, betting it can help patients whose disease stops responding to existing treatments.<\/p>\n
Nurix will receive $700 million upfront for bexobrutideg, a pill being developed for certain blood cancers and potentially other immune-system and neurological diseases, Roche said Monday. The firms will share development costs and split US profits equally, and Roche will commercialize the therapy outside the US.<\/p>\n
Roche shares slipped 0.9% in Zurich. The stock was up about 21% over the past 12 months through Friday\u2019s close. Nurix shares rose as much as 24% in early trading in New York.<\/p>\n
The agreement gives Roche access to a so-called BTK degrader, a new class of medicines aimed at eliminating a protein that drives several blood cancers. The companies said the drug could offer an advantage over current BTK inhibitors by potentially overcoming resistance mutations that emerge during treatment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe this has best-in-class potential based on its highly selective BTK targeting, high potency and the clinical data we\u2019ve seen so far,\u201d Roche\u2019s Chief Medical Officer Stefan Frings said in an interview. \u201cThe safety data we have so far looks very promising.\u201d<\/p>\n
The drug would especially strengthen Roche\u2019s position in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Frings said. The Swiss drugmaker already has approved treatments for CLL, the most common type of leukemia in adults which usually develops slowly over many years as faulty white blood cells accumulate in the body.<\/p>\n
The collaboration adds to Roche\u2019s push to bolster its cancer portfolio as it seeks new drivers of growth beyond aging blockbuster medicines. The companies expect the transaction to close in the third quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n
