{"id":8144,"date":"2026-02-16T00:07:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T00:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/8144\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T00:07:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T00:07:20","slug":"santiago-calatrava-adds-angular-glass-office-building-to-zurich-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/8144\/","title":{"rendered":"Santiago Calatrava adds angular glass office building to Zurich station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/santiago-calatrava\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Santiago Calatrava<\/a> has added a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/stone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stone<\/a> and glass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/office-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">office<\/a> building beside the Stadelhofen Station in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/zurich\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zurich<\/a>, which includes a\u00a0multi-level bicycle parking facility.<\/p>\n<p>Named the Haus zum Falken, the eight-storey building sits on a narrow, triangular plot at the eastern end of the Stadelhofen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/railway-stations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">railway station<\/a>, which was previously updated and expanded by <a href=\"https:\/\/calatrava.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Calatrava<\/a> in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Calatrava designed the office building to have a &#8220;meandering composition&#8221; \u2013 cladding its steel and stone form with glass panels that highlight folds in its facade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2266312 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/santiago-calatrava-haus-zum-falken-zurich_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of Haus zum Falken in Zurich\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"  \/>Santiago Calatrava has completed an office building beside the Stadelhofen Station in Zurich<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The area around the Haus zum Falken is very familiar to me, as I was involved in the construction of the Stadelhofen Station here for eight years,&#8221; Calatrava explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Architecture here is more than functional \u2013 it is an artistic event in the city,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The glass facade forms a meandering composition through the vertical rhythm of profiles and glass.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/office-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2266309 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/santiago-calatrava-haus-zum-falken-zurich_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Glass office building exterior by Santiago Calatrava\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/><\/a>Stone, steel and glass were used for the structure<\/p>\n<p>Solid stone was used to form the building&#8217;s base, from which the glass facade rises in an arched form.<\/p>\n<p>Flanked by a public square, the building&#8217;s entrance is sheltered by its upper floors and complete with a glazed front framed by soft-edged stone pillars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Subtle stone details extend toward the lower edges of the glass facade, establishing a dialogue between the grounded plinth and the glass body above,&#8221; Calatrava said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/28\/santiago-calatrava-gare-de-mons-station-belgium\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/santiago-calatrava-gare-de-mons-belgium-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Gare de Mons by Santiago Calatrava\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Santiago Calatrava arranges Belgian station around &#8220;monumental bridge&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A curved motif extends to the interior, which opens up to a double-height lobby adorned by a wooden relief and expansive ceiling light.<\/p>\n<p>From here, elevators provide access to the four floors of office space above, and is paired with a staircase provided at the building&#8217;s opposite entrance.<\/p>\n<p>At this end, the building opens up to a skylit, four-storey atrium where the sculptural stairwell serves as a &#8220;dynamic centrepiece that connects all levels&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2266305 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/santiago-calatrava-haus-zum-falken-zurich_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Staircase within Haus zum Falken by Santiago Calatrava\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A sculptural stairwell features within the building<\/p>\n<p>Each of the upper levels offer column-free office spaces lit by openings across the glazed facade.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a three-storey public bicycle parking facility provides space for 800 bikes below ground and is accessed via a ramp at ground level.<\/p>\n<p>The Haus zum Falken is complete with a green roof equipped with photovoltaic panels, while the facade acoustics render noise pollution &#8220;virtually imperceptible&#8221;
