Removing lead service lines is a critical step in ensuring safe, reliable drinking water for residents and businesses while reducing potential exposure to lead.

The funding package includes a grant of up to $8.7 million and interest-free financing of up to $3.7 million through the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which is administered by the state’s Department of Health and Environmental Facilities Corp.

“This funding represents a transformative investment in Geneva’s water infrastructure and the health of our community,” Hendrix said in a news release. “Replacing lead service lines is one of the most important actions we can take to safeguard drinking water quality for current and future generations. We are grateful to New York State and our federal partners for their commitment to supporting communities like Geneva.”

Mayor Jim Cecere praised the financing.

“This award is a tremendous win for the City of Geneva and for every resident who relies on our public water system,” he said. “Securing more than $12 million in state and federal support allows us to make critical investments in public health and infrastructure while minimizing the financial burden on our taxpayers.”

Joe Venuti, director of public works, complimented the work of city employees, as well as the cooperation of residents.

“I am so excited for this massive infrastructure win,” he said. “This funding award reflects several years of work by our Water Department, Engineering staff, and the residents we serve. A critical part of securing these funds was the completion of our lead service line inventory. That effort would not have been possible without the dedication of our team and the cooperation of our water customers who responded to surveys, provided information, and allowed inspections of their service lines. Their participation helped us build the accurate inventory needed to compete successfully for this funding so we can move forward with replacing lead service lines throughout our community. This award is a testament to what can be accomplished when city staff and residents work together toward a common goal.”

Hendrix said the funding was approved following an evaluation by the Department of Health under the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program and must still receive additional approvals.

She said the project is expected to create long-term public health benefits while supporting infrastructure resiliency, regulatory compliance, and the long-term sustainability of Geneva’s drinking water system.

GENEVA — The city’s efforts to replace aging water service lines got a big boost.
