{"id":8375,"date":"2026-02-16T03:53:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T03:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/8375\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T03:53:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T03:53:11","slug":"switzerland-remain-undefeated-after-top-of-the-table-clash-at-olympic-winter-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/8375\/","title":{"rendered":"Switzerland remain undefeated after top of the table clash at Olympic Winter Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                  <img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/d2b67d85980e950918fbcaee2ab8cd888d14ffa05bf159fe80b4be0bc6c15244.png\"  class=\"avatar avatar-96 photo\" height=\"96\" width=\"96\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"t-primary tx-uc mb-0\">Author<\/p>\n<p>              World Curling Media<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead t-primary fw-bold tx-uc mb-2\">15 February 2026<\/p>\n<p>A tense extra-end battle saw Switzerland remain undefeated when they played Great Britain in Sunday evening\u2019s seventh men\u2019s round-robin session, coming out on top with a 6-5 final score.<\/p>\n<p>The first two ends saw both teams draw for one point and in the third Great Britain stole a single after an attempted double take-out by Switzerland\u2019s fourth player Benoit Schwarz-Van Berkel was unsuccessful, still leaving in one British counter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-WO_02152139281276296SF_original_uxga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42348\"  \/>Team Switzerland \u00a9 World Curling \/ Stephen Fisher<\/p>\n<p>In the fourth end, Switzerland had a chance to draw for two, however, despite passing multiple guards, their stone didn\u2019t curl enough to get right on the button between one of their own and a British stone, so they had to settle for one.<\/p>\n<p>Before the fifth end break, Great Britain tried to score two more, but Bruce Mouat\u2019s hit-and-roll moved just slightly too far and they only scored one. They went into the break ahead by 3-2.<\/p>\n<p>After a blanked sixth end, Mouat attempted a hit-and-roll with this final stone. However, his stone rolled out of the house, exposing a vacant button along with a counting Swiss stone in the house. This allowed Schwarz-Van Berkel to draw his last stone for two and a 4-3 lead.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-WO_02151934531275844SF_original_uxga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42350\"  \/>Grant Hardie and Bobby Lammie, Great Britain \u00a9 World Curling \/ Stephen Fisher<\/p>\n<p>The eighth end saw Bruce Mouat draw for one and level the score to 4-4. The teams then swapped singles with draws in the ninth and tenth end, forcing the game into an extra end.<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland had hammer in this end, but when Bruce Mouat played his final stone, Great Britain were lying three. However, Schwarz-Van Berkel played a precise take-out removing the closest British stone to the centre and leaving his own close enough to score the winning point, closing the game at 6-5.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-WO_02152204291276655SF_original_uxga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42352\"  \/>Sven Michel, Switzerland \u00a9 World Curling \/ Stephen Fisher<\/p>\n<p>After the game, skip Yannick Schwaller, \u201cFeeling very good of course. Beating Team Mouat, it feels good always when you do that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were playing good, we were playing good and it\u2019s always a dogfight but it\u2019s always a lot of fun, that\u2019s the type of game we want to play out there. I was happy we could show a real battle on the Olympic stage here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the tense extra end, he said, \u201c All in all just a very good grind by the boys. Again, a tough shot to win for Benoit through the hole, but managed so well and I\u2019m so happy we got away with the win there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And looking at what\u2019s needed to have successful rest of the campaign, Schwaller said, \u201cWe have to have a lot of fun, that comes first I guess. We really enjoy our time here as a group. I think that also shows on the ice and that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to continue doing. A lot of things we are doing right now is very, very good, so more of the same and enjoying it along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-WO_02152147331277264SF_original_uxga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42354\"  \/>Yannick Schwaller, Switzerland \u00a9 World Curling \/ Stephen Fisher<\/p>\n<p>Italy set off on the right foot in their game when they scored three points in the first end. Strong build-up play meant they already had two stones in the house when skip Joel Retornaz came to play his last. He then played a raise on a single Czechia stone to score three.<\/p>\n<p>Czechia fought back in the second end when, already lying one, skip Lukas Klima played a double take-out for two.<\/p>\n<p>In the third end, Italy replied when Retornaz played a take-out on a Czech counter and they scored two after an umpire\u2019s measure. They stole another single in the fourth end after an attempted raise tap-back from Czechia\u2019s Klima went wrong.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-WO_02151906081274918SF_original_uxga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42355\"  \/>Amos Mosaner and Sebastiano Arman, Italy \u00a9 World Curling \/ Stephen Fisher<\/p>\n<p>Czechia added one more point with a draw, bringing the score to 6-3 at the fifth end break.<\/p>\n<p>By the eighth end, the score sat at 7-4, and a when an attempt to play a double take-out was unsuccessful for Lukas Klima and he only removed one Italian stone, Retornaz was able to draw for two more points.<\/p>\n<p>In the ninth and final end, Klima\u2019s double take-out was unsuccessful, leaving Italy to steal one, and Czechia conceded with the final score at 10-5.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-WO_02151907361273028SF_original_uxga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42357\"  \/>Mattia Giovanella, Italy \u00a9 World Curling \/ Stephen Fisher<\/p>\n<p>This was Italy\u2019s third win and they now sit joint fifth with Norway on the rankings. Czechia are still looking for their first win.<\/p>\n<p>After the game Italy skip Joel Retornaz said, \u201cWe\u2019re feeling good. We wanted to win this game for sure and we went out there hungry and I think the performance was very solid by our team and we deserved a win tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking forward to the rest of the competition, he said, \u201cI think we just need to keep performing the way we are. Even the losses were very good games, we were solid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few details here and there are when we lost our games, so we\u2019ll try to avoid those details and if we keep playing the way we\u2019re playing I\u2019m sure more wins will come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-WO_02151922181275470SF_original_uxga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42359\"  \/>Team Italy \u00a9 World Curling \/ Stephen Fisher<\/p>\n<p>This session also saw Canada beat People\u2019s Republic of China, 6-3. After two blank ends Canada got their first point on the board and then stole another in the fourth. People\u2019s Republic of China fought to level the score to 2-2 in the fifth end, but Canada continued to score, with two in the sixth and eighth. People\u2019s Republic of China managed to score one in the ninth but then conceded.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1-WO_02151908081273057SF_original_uxga-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42361\"  \/>Brett Gallant, Canada \u00a9 World Curling \/ Stephen Fisher<\/p>\n<p>The final game in the session saw United States of America record their fourth win, this time against Norway. After stealing two points in both the second and third end, the Americans were ahead by 5-3 at the fifth end break. In the ninth end, Norway were behind 5-8, until skip Magnus Ramsfjell played a take-out to score three, levelling the score to 8-8 going into the final end.
