Check in your suitcase and zip into the city for a brief encounter with a European cultural capital that\u2019s set amidst idyllic natural surroundings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-5c652994ec1e9ff84cbfcdc2e2f22fe8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Zurich airport, voted the world\u2019s seventh best in the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnngo.com\/explorations\/life\/world-airport-awards-winner-097986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Airport Awards<\/a>, is a mere 10-minute train ride from the city center, with trains leaving about every 10 minutes. You can safely venture into the city without fear of missing your connection \u2013 this being Switzerland, the trains run like clockwork.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-5733e5bc79f238c0261827f85a851c8b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Swiss are among the world\u2019s biggest users of trains, second only to the Japanese, and insist on rail services that are reliably punctual. Zurich\u2019s hyper-efficient Glattalbahn tram network is also invaluable for the time-pressed traveler. The number 10 service runs every seven to 15 minutes and connects Zurich Airport with the city\u2019s centrally located main railway station.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-05d7f46e09f530d3ee1e0cc2470c3a1d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Situated at the northern tip of Lake Zurich, with a view of the Alps in the distance, Switzerland\u2019s largest city has a rich history as a center of European high culture. With a heritage stretching back to Roman times, it is home to grand historic buildings and more than 50 museums, meaning travelers will find plenty to occupy themselves with.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-251a58321f22e61f1ac79e22684fd6f6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            None of it comes cheaply though: Zurich recently overtook Tokyo to become the world\u2019s most expensive city, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/graphicdetail\/2012\/02\/daily-chart-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Worldwide Cost of Living Survey<\/a>. To mitigate those expenses, even those on a flying visit will likely find it worthwhile buying a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zuerich.com\/en\/visitor\/Information\/zuerich-card.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ZurichCARD<\/a>, which can be bought at the service center at the airport or the railway station.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-18c9204b5dff5c744ed2d3af5f8a2dd0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The card, which costs 20 CHF ($21.60) for a 24-hour option, offers free travel on the city\u2019s comprehensive public transport network of trains, trams, buses and boats, free admission to museums, and significant discounts on guided tours and other attractions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-8d61fa6ab9f759613d7e0d3878098156@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Given that the return train fare from the airport to the city center is 12.80 CHF ($13.80), and the entry to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kunsthaus.ch\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kunsthaus<\/a>, the city\u2019s modern art museum, is 15 CHF ($16.20), even if you only have time for one activity, the card will more than likely pay for itself.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-2ac0209a2b10f744a281ed8e5e29b11f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2014\/08\/26\/travel\/zurich-chocolate-tour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chocolate city \u2013 exploring Zurich\u2019s dark, sweet side<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-a240abcdc404f34b55ea51c83ecc6736@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Zurich Tourism advises taking a guided tour of the city, which can be booked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zuerich.com\/en\/Visitor\/tours\/guided-tours.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">through its website<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-b5caa7a3444e283150ac37d707ca7d6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tours of the postcard scenes of the city\u2019s historic Aldstadt, or Old Town, take two hours and run every day, while other tours visit key sites that give an insight into the city\u2019s history \u2013 the rise of guilds in the 14th century, or how the city became a stronghold of the Reformation. Climb the tower for a great view of the city.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-b2a1a37852b8b5a4a8974d6a216e9a70@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Five minutes walk across the Limmat is one of the city\u2019s other major churches, the Fraumunster, featuring stained glass windows by celebrated Russian artist Marc Chagall.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-e890cedf9bafbff01bfaf5dd581c3ef6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Behind the Fraumunster runs the Bahnhofstrasse, a mile-long shopping street that is one of the world\u2019s most exclusive (and expensive).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-f0a4dba6e86fd493a4cd5d65a87fea0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you have a few hours to spare before your flight, and feel like a bracing trip on the water, the ZurichCARD also allows for free travel on the boats plying Lake Zurich. Boat cruises on 90-minute round trips depart from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zuerich.com\/en\/Visitor\/Experience\/Nature\/zsg.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lake Zurich Navigation Company<\/a>\u2019s depot on the waterfront at Burkliplatz, about five minutes walk from the Fraumunster.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-3320a94691ae00350b43ad5c51fa131c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sightseeing can work up a hunger and some of the city\u2019s most distinctive dining experiences are to be had in the Old Town, housed in halls that were formerly home to the guilds that wielded power in the city.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-6d105a7ac6fb42ce7036de053fa7e757@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But on a tight time frame, it might make more sense to grab something on the go. Follow the crowds to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zuerich.com\/en\/Visitor\/Gastronomy\/Restaurants\/vorderer-sternen-grill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Sternengrill<\/a> \u2013 a mobile bratwurst vendor that is a city institution.
