Swiss<\/a> \u200bpolice fired \u200btear gas as protesters opposed to \u200ba \u200cG7<\/a> \u2060summit across \u200cthe border in France targeted \u2060United Nations buildings in \u200bGeneva, a \u200cReuters witness said.<\/p>\n

Some demonstrators threw stones \u200cat a \u200bUN telecommunication building and also threw flares \u200bas police \u200btried to \u200bmove them \u200baway from the UN<\/a> site. There were also reports of windows of a bank having been smashed, and a Tesla<\/a> being set ablaze.<\/p>\n

The march was otherwise largely peaceful, \u200bwith \u200cup to 7,000 people attending, according to police, who said \u2060they confiscated some knives and pyrotechnic devices.<\/p>\n

Demonstrators said they came to protest against the G7 as a symbol \u200cof concentrated political and economic power. Last week Tesla owner Elon \u2060Musk, who has worked as an advisor to US President Donald Trump<\/a>, became the world\u2019s first trillionaire, reigniting concerns about inequality.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, \u200bit\u2019s a meeting of the rich that shows once \u200cagain how the rich can become even richer while the poor are left behind,\u201d said protestor Pippa Saugy.<\/p>\n

The June 15\u201317 G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, on the shore of Lake \u200cGeneva, will bring together the leaders of France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, alongside \u200bthe European Union.<\/p>\n

Wars in the Middle East and Ukraine are set to dominate the agenda, while leaders will seek to avoid a clash with \u200bTrump as he seeks to finalise a framework peace deal with Iran.<\/p>\n

In Geneva, \u200bbusinesses were boarded up and hundreds of riot police \u200bwere deployed in the streets amid prior concerns the about violence. Protests have been common at G7 \u200bgatherings over the years, with many demonstrators using the summits to decry capitalism<\/a>, globalisation<\/a>, climate change<\/a> and inequality.<\/p>\n

Mattia Piccard, bristled at the strong police presence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an attempt to frighten demonstrators, to frighten people and discourage them from coming out \u2060to protest,\u201d Piccard said.<\/p>\n

Cl\u00e9lia Colin, another demonstrator, said she wanted to raise the issue of gender \u2060inequality.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe values represented \u200bby the G7 are completely misogynistic, and they contribute to inequality because there is absolutely no equality,\u201d said Colin.<\/p>\n
