{"id":8440,"date":"2026-02-16T05:08:41","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T05:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/8440\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T05:08:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T05:08:41","slug":"basel-chair-calls-for-new-crypto-rules-for-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/8440\/","title":{"rendered":"Basel Chair Calls for New Crypto Rules for Banks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The head of a global banking regulator is calling for an overhaul of cryptocurrency regulations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rules that require banks to hold large amounts of capital to cover potential losses on crypto have to be rewritten after the U.S. and Great Britain refused to enact them,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.riksbank.se\/en-gb\/about-the-riksbank\/organisation\/the-executive-board\/erik-thedeen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Erik Thed\u00e9en<\/a>, chair of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bis.org\/bcbs\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Basel Committee on Banking Supervision<\/a>, said in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a02072d6-2444-44e2-99b4-cfd427d90cc0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">interview<\/a>\u00a0with the Financial Times (FT) Wednesday (Nov. 19).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thed\u00e9en said \u201ca different approach\u201d was needed on the global rules for banks\u2019 cryptocurrency holdings, but that this would be tough to accomplish due to \u201cdifferent views\u201d among regulators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the FT notes, the rapid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cryptocurrency\/2025\/stablecoins-surge-this-week-market-value-tops-300-billion-dollars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">rise of stablecoins<\/a>, created to be a safer form of crypto assets but would still be covered by the most stringent Basel rules, have led calls from American U.S. banks and officials for the Basel committee to reexamine its crypto framework.<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Google-PYMNTS-blackbox.svg\" alt=\"Preferred Source\" class=\"img-fluid\"\/><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d love to be your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=pymnts.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">preferred source for news<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Please add us to your preferred sources list so our news, data and interviews show up in your feed. Thanks!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat has happened has been fairly dramatic,\u201d said Thed\u00e9en, who also serves as governor of Sweden\u2019s central bank. \u201cThis very strong increase in stablecoins and how much assets are in that system calls for a different approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His comments came weeks after a report that a group of countries, led by the U.S., were calling on the committee to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cryptocurrency\/2025\/us-seeks-review-of-basel-committee-rules-on-banks-crypto-holdings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">amend its rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in August, a group of global financial trade associations called on the Basel Committee to reconsider its Crypto Asset Exposure Standard before it went into effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing to the committee, these associations said that the standard\u2019s capital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cryptocurrency\/2025\/financial-trade-associations-call-changes-bcbs-crypto-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">treatment of crypto assets<\/a> is\u00a0too conservative and punitive, not in line with actual risks and inconsistent with modern market risk management practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe prudential framework for those markets should not discourage participation by imposing overly punitive capital requirements that are inconsistent with actual risks,\u201d the letter said. \u201cIf banks choose to participate, they should be able to do so within a technology-neutral framework that is proportionate and risk-sensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other cryptocurrency regulation news, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occ.treas.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Office of the Comptroller of the Currency<\/a>\u00a0this week published an interpretive letter which the regulator said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cryptocurrency\/2025\/occ-says-banks-can-pay-crypto-asset-network-fees-for-permissible-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">confirmed<\/a> that for specified activities, national banks can pay crypto-asset network fees and hold crypto assets as principal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs with any activity, a national bank must conduct these activities in a safe and sound manner and in compliance with applicable law,\u201d the regulator said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PYMNTS reported in July that the confirmation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.occ.treas.gov\/about\/who-we-are\/comptroller\/index-comptroller-of-the-currency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jonathan Gould<\/a>\u00a0as comptroller of the currency signaled a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/bank-regulation\/2025\/new-occ-head-set-to-focus-on-digital-assets-and-new-bank-formation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">relaxation of crypto regulations<\/a>, particularly for banks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The head of a global banking regulator is calling for an overhaul of cryptocurrency regulations.
