State funds have been secured to help the Berks County Industrial Development Authority clean up environmental issues on land eyed for new development.<\/p>\n
Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger announced Monday that $13,687 was awarded through the Industrial Sites Reuse Program to remediate three lots at Berks Park 183 behind the Reading Regional Airport.<\/p>\n
The site was historically used as a military base in the 1940s, a former metal plating facility and an auto body shop before being used by the airport authority. State officials said the site will meet environmental conditions for redevelopment following the remediation work.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis investment will help make Bern Township safer and healthier while also providing a site for new development that will create opportunities for businesses, new jobs for our workers and continue strengthening our economy,\u201d Siger said in a release about the investment.<\/p>\n
He said funds will be used to perform an environmental assessment that will include sampling and site-specific health and safety plans, a geophysical investigation, soil borings, collection of soil samples and a laboratory analysis of the samples.<\/p>\n
