{"id":85515,"date":"2026-06-16T19:00:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T19:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/85515\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T19:00:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T19:00:07","slug":"swiss-resort-favoured-by-movie-stars-and-world-leaders-brings-serenity-to-us-iran-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/85515\/","title":{"rendered":"Swiss resort favoured by movie stars and world leaders brings serenity to US-Iran deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-UZJMS37TX5A6HK5SHAKXHFGL4Y\">The signing ceremony to halt the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/06\/15\/live-us-iran-deal-trump-hormuz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/06\/15\/live-us-iran-deal-trump-hormuz\/\">US-Iran conflict<\/a>, which has rattled the global economy and claimed lives, stands in stark contrast to the serenity and tranquillity of the location, nestled in Switzerland&#8217;s central canton of Nidwalden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-Q2PJ6VCISNHFNLUE6RCU2WZRK4\">The US and Iran are set to sign the highly anticipated preliminary agreement on Friday at the luxury Burgenstock resort, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs told The National.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-EKDWJPAICFE65HLITDJ7ST5NS4\">The agreement is expected to bring another pause to the war for at least 60 days, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2026\/06\/16\/gulf-lng-carriers-plan-hormuz-departure-as-us-iran-deal-nears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2026\/06\/16\/gulf-lng-carriers-plan-hormuz-departure-as-us-iran-deal-nears\/\">restore traffic<\/a> through the Strait of Hormuz and establish a framework for negotiations on a broader peace deal covering Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme, frozen assets and other key issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-S7HB3J2WC5HUDJMP3KMMDEF22E\">\u201cFor several days now, the FDFA has been in close contact with the US, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar regarding the possible signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the US and Iran in Switzerland,\u201d said the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-Z5JIUFQ4QVEHHHPF4DL7ZEZO3U\">\u201cAt this stage, the signing is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at Burgenstock in the canton of Nidwalden\u201d, it noted, adding that the location was proposed by the Pakistani and Qatari mediators, as well as by the US and Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-UFW5FC3YPFCIHLH2HD3D4DKNAE\">\u201cSwitzerland is acting as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/06\/16\/no-israel-without-us-and-no-regime-change-in-iran-five-trump-takeaways-from-g7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/06\/16\/no-israel-without-us-and-no-regime-change-in-iran-five-trump-takeaways-from-g7\/\">facilitator in this process<\/a>, creating the practical and diplomatic conditions necessary for this meeting to take place on Swiss territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-6RQDC3ZQTVFLFBVAYUSDQCINRE\">Perched high above Lake Lucerne in Switzerland&#8217;s central canton of Nidwalden, the Burgenstock resort is one of the country&#8217;s most exclusive destinations, surrounded by alpine forests and sweeping mountain views.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-K5ABDYHWEZFFXMII32WLWPGZVY\">The sprawling complex, offering a setting more commonly associated with luxury holidays than high-stakes diplomacy, had hosted heads of state, business leaders and international summits, and is accessible by a combination of boat and funicular railway, adding to its secluded atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-D7NMFT2QCVBRXOBYX2AOAPNC7M\">In 2024 it hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2024\/06\/15\/ukraine-peace-summit-seeks-to-take-first-steps-towards-a-just-and-lasting-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a Ukraine peace summit<\/a> attended by Arab states including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Diplomats unveiled a \u201ccommon vision\u201d for ending the war, but the meeting ultimately failed to invigorate peace talks as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had hoped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-F6ODZ5WDHNALFMKWYRWIYXICF4\">Two decades earlier, a Burgenstock Agreement was signed at the resort in 2002 to end fighting between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sudan<\/a>&#8216;s government and rebels in what would later become South Sudan. The truce was negotiated with the help of the US and Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-XPGPJKF4PFHEJLXOJNUX4DC5DI\">In 2004 there were talks at Burgenstock between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Turkey<\/a> and Greece in the hope of reunifying Cyprus before it entered the European Union, a dream of then-UN secretary general Kofi Annan that ultimately went unfulfilled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-NJZKQ4OWWNBHRFMJVZHRGALCFQ\">Former US president Jimmy Carter, German chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Israeli prime ministers David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir are among previous visitors to Burgenstock. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-4BJVVJHNVZD4DOCQRH5Z3D6KG4\">The resort is named after the 1,128-metre mountain on which it sits. Beyond politics, luminaries from Hollywood have also spent time at the resort, which today consists of 30 buildings and complexes with 67 residences. It was redeveloped by Qatar&#8217;s Katara Hospitality in a nine-year project completed in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 eVvrYS margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-FJNHENHRHVFJZFOXALDBQLC6IM\">Actress Audrey Hepburn married her first husband, Mel Ferrer at Burgenstock in 1954. A year later, she was back playing golf at the resort.
