{"id":8791,"date":"2026-02-16T10:39:24","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T10:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/8791\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T10:39:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T10:39:24","slug":"major-chinese-shareholder-set-to-back-rio-tinto-glencore-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/8791\/","title":{"rendered":"Major Chinese Shareholder Set to Back Rio Tinto-Glencore Merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable\">Aluminum Corporation of China, a major shareholder in Rio Tinto, is set to support the mining giant\u2019s potential takeover of Glencore, as it would give the Chinese firm additional exposure to copper supply, sources with knowledge of the matter told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-01-19\/chinalco-seen-backing-rio-bid-for-glencore-to-gain-copper-share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a> on Monday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aluminum Corporation of China, also known as Chinalco, holds 14.55% of Rio Tinto\u2019s London-listed shares, and any potential deal would need the approval of both the key Chinese shareholder and the Chinese authorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rio Tinto Group and Glencore Plc earlier this month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/en\/news\/releases\/2026\/statement-regarding-glencore-plc-glencore\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed<\/a> they have been engaging in preliminary discussions about a possible combination of some or all of their businesses, which could include an all-share merger between Rio Tinto and Glencore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The parties\u2019 current expectation is that any merger transaction would be effected through the acquisition of Glencore by Rio Tinto by way of a Court-sanctioned scheme of arrangement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A potential merger would rank among <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Metals\/Commodities\/A-Rio-Glencore-Tie-Up-Would-Redraw-the-Map-of-Global-Mining.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the largest transactions ever<\/a> attempted in the mining sector.
