Reaching 45,000 cocoa-farming\u00a0households, the Nestl\u00e9\u00a0Income Accelerator\u00a0Programme\u00a0has increased cocoa yields by four percent, increased cocoa income by 190 percent,\u00a0and boosted women\u2019s empowerment by 114 percent\u00a0across C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire since its launch in 2022.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

An independent evaluation by the\u00a0KIT Institute<\/a>\u00a0has found that\u00a0Nestl\u00e9\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Income Accelerator\u00a0programme\u00a0continues to generate positive results for cocoa-farming households in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, with improvements recorded across\u00a0productivity, income, women\u2019s\u00a0empowerment,\u00a0and household resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The assessment examined almost 2,000 households\u00a0participating\u00a0in the\u00a0programme\u00a0during its test-at-scale phase, which began in 2022. According to the findings, participating households achieved a four percent increase in cocoa yields measured in kilograms per hectare, whilst\u00a0yields amongst\u00a0comparable households declined by 16 percent over the same period. This equates to a 20-percentage point difference in performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During the challenging 2024\/2025 cocoa season, households enrolled in the\u00a0programme\u00a0produced an average of 2,116 kilogrammes of cocoa, approximately 500 kilogrammes more than similar households outside the initiative. The report suggests these results\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0greater resilience in the face of difficult weather conditions and fluctuating cocoa markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The study also highlighted significant social impacts. The\u00a0proportion of women considered empowered more than doubled compared to 2022, increasing by 114 percent and exceeding comparable communities by 66 percentage points. Participation in\u00a0village\u00a0savings and\u00a0loans\u00a0associations also rose by 23 percentage points amongst\u00a0women involved in the\u00a0programme.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The report attributes many of these gains to the\u00a0programme\u2019s integrated model, which combines farm support, household\u00a0support,\u00a0and conditional cash transfers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0KIT Institute\u2019s\u00a0evaluation, increased adoption of good agricultural practices alongside greater involvement of women in household financial decision-making contributed to improvements in cocoa\u00a0productivity,\u00a0income,\u00a0and overall household well-being.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Additionally, food insecurity declined by eight percentage points amongst\u00a0participating households, whilst\u00a0dietary diversity and ownership of\u00a0productive assets improved. Savings levels also\u00a0increased substantially, with\u00a0participating households recording gains that were 272 percentage points higher than those seen in the comparison group.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The study\u00a0also\u00a0found cocoa income amongst\u00a0participating households rose by 190 percent, driven by strong increases in cocoa revenues. In addition, the reliability of cash transfer payments improved during the evaluation period.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite these advances, the report notes that income diversification has yet to increase significantly. However, it concludes that the\u00a0programme\u00a0is helping\u00a0establish\u00a0the foundations\u00a0required\u00a0for future diversification, which could\u00a0provide farming families with greater\u00a0protection from market volatility and other external shocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Commenting on the findings,\u00a0St\u00e9phane Detaille<\/a>, Head of ESG for Confectionery & Snacking Strategic Business Unit at Nestl\u00e9, said:\u00a0\u201cThese findings\u00a0validate\u00a0our pioneering approach to helping cocoa-farming families in West Africa close the gap to a living income.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey show that rewarding effective farm practices, strengthening women\u2019s empowerment,\u00a0and building household resilience deliver encouraging results and must go\u00a0hand-in-hand\u00a0to deliver lasting impact. They also help us\u00a0identify\u00a0where to focus next \u2013 particularly on income diversification and\u00a0protection against future shocks \u2013 as we further scale the\u00a0programme\u00a0to more cocoa-farming families.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the coming 12 months, the KIT Institute plans to explore the factors behind yield improvements in greater depth, including the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices, income\u00a0diversification,\u00a0and school attendance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The evaluation draws on four rounds of household survey data collected between 2022 and 2025. Participating households were compared with similar households in cooperatives receiving alternative sustainability support. The analysis was conducted against a backdrop of climate volatility, disease pressure, rising\u00a0production costs,\u00a0and wider changes affecting the cocoa sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the\u00a0programme\u00a0develops, Nestl\u00e9 is also expanding its collaborative efforts across the industry. This includes its role as a co-founder of the\u00a0TogetherCocoa\u00a0Foundation, which\u00a0seeks\u00a0to strengthen cooperation across the cocoa sector, help address the living income gap,\u00a0and improve the long-term resilience of cocoa supply chains.\u00a0<\/p>\n
