TOI Correspondent From Washington: The United States and Iran began talks in Switzerland on Sunday amid a tentative 60-day ceasefire in the middle-east even as US President Donald Trump launched a foul-mouthed tirade against Tehran if it once again closed the Strait of Hormuz as it is threatening to because of continued clashes on Lebanon. “You close it and you won’t have a country…you won’t even make it back to your f—ing country,” Trump told Fox News in a phone call, according to its correspondent Trey Yingst, who said the President was relaying a message he claimed to have conveyed to leaders of the IRGC in a direct phone call. Reports of Iran having closed the Strait of Hormuz again emerged after it accused Israel of continuing attacks in Lebanon in violation of the terms of the MoU. Israel says it is only responding to attacks from Hezbollah. Washington has leaned on Israel to end the attacks to give peace talks a chance, but Israel has asserted its right to self-defense from Iranian proxies viz Hezbollah. On his social media feed, Trump wrote, “Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they don’t, we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!” But he has also expressed frustration at Israel, raging that the country “’can’t do anything without blowing up buildings.”Trump also told Fox that 19 million barrels of oil left through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, adding that if the two sides failed to reach a deal, the US. could become the “Guardian Angel” of the waterway, collect tolls, and take 20% of the oil. “We may take over the Strait, if we have to…I’ll blow the sh*t out of them.” Trump told the right wing channel. When told about Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian remarks about Iran maintaining its right to enrich uranium, Trump was quoted as saying, “He better watch his mouth…He better shape up or we’ll take over the rest of the country.” The US President views the 60-day ceasefire and negotiation framework established under the MoU he signed last week as “just an option,” and “I can do whatever I want after that option.”Trump’s tirade and threats amid ongoing talks in Switzerland has made his vice-president J.D.Vance’s task of clinching a deal even harder against an Iranian delegation that is said to be insisting on a complete ceasefire in Lebanon before engaging with the US on other issues. Vance arrived in Switzerland with his wife Usha, who is due with their fourth child. Their three other children did not appear to have accompanied them on what is celebrated as Father’s Day in the US. In remarks to reporters on the margins of the Swiss meetings, Vance, in appreciation of the help the US has received from Pakistan in mediating with Iran, joked, “I have two very important people in my life – an Indian and a Pakistani. The Indian is my wife Usha, and the Pakistani is Field Marshal Asim Munir.” Munir has accompanied Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to Burgenstock, the Swiss resort where talks are taking place. Video clips from the resort showed the duo in the same room as Veep Vance and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araggchi, the first time the latter two have been seen together in front of cameras. The Iranian team was later reported to have insisted that there should be no media presence at the talks. Tirades against Iran aside, Trump continued his online feud with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, insisting that she had sought to take a selfie with him, while picking on British PM Keir Starmer, suggesting he should quit. “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!” Trump posted on his Truth Social account, continuing a new policy of trolling foreign leaders on social media and interfering directly in their domestic politics.

Washington has leaned on Israel to end the attacks to give peace talks a chance.
