{"id":899,"date":"2026-02-11T16:13:25","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T16:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/899\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T16:13:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T16:13:25","slug":"ny-archdiocese-accuses-chubb-insurer-of-double-dealing-on-sex-abuse-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/899\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Archdiocese accuses Chubb insurer of double dealing on sex abuse cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/18\/us-news\/bishop-ronald-hicks-will-inherit-ny-archdiocese-sex-abuse-scandal-and-hes-already-facing-big-questions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Archdiocese of New York<\/a> is accusing its insurance company of waging a \u201cshadow campaign\u201d against the church by moonlighting as a sex abuse victims\u2019 rights group.<\/p>\n<p>The bombshell claims of \u201cfraud and sabotage\u201d were made as part of a lawsuit filed by the archdiocese against Chubb, the insurer defending it against more than 1,500<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/08\/us-news\/ny-archdiocese-will-negotiate-global-sex-abuse-settlement-raise-300m-for-1300-victims\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> child sex abuse claims<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNewly discovered evidence reveals that, since at least 2023, Chubb has been fraudulently posing as a victims\u2019 rights organization known as the \u2018Church Accountability Project\u2019 and attempting to undermine and weaken the Insured\u2019s\u2019 defense,\u201d states the complaint filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral in midtown Manhattan on Jan. 25, 2026. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The archdiocese has an existing case against Chubb in a dispute over whether the church or its insurers are responsible for payouts in sex abuse cases.<\/p>\n<p>It accuses Chubb of being the force behind the \u201cChurch Accountability Project,\u201d a website that attacks the archdiocese and supports alleged victims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe insurance purchased by the Archdiocese is designed to cover accidents, not to compensate for deliberately concealing a pattern of abuse,\u201d the site states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChubb has pressed for transparency and accountability for years, yet the Archdiocese repeatedly refused to share crucial details regarding what they knew and when,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance excludes this type of conduct for good reason as covering it would reward those who facilitate criminal behavior, rather than those who take vigilant steps to protect children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop-designate Ronald Hicks and Cardinal Timothy Dolan, outgoing Archbishop of New York, process through St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral during a mass on Dec. 18, 2025.
