(WITN) &#8211; A rabid racoon has been found in New Bern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Craven County Health Department says the animal was discovered at the corner of Simmons Street and Elizabeth Avenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Anyone bitten or exposed to the raccoon\u2019s saliva should contact your doctor or the health department for a rabies risk assessment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Health experts say a common mistake pet owners make is using bare hands to check their pet for bites after an encounter with a raccoon or fox. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">They say if your pet is bitten, leave the wound alone and take the pet to a veterinarian.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WITN.
