Matthias Huss, head of the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Service GLAMOS, warns of a substantial reduction in the region\u2019s ice reserves.<\/p>\n<p>According to preliminary assessments, the snow and ice accumulated over the winter could completely disappear by Monday. This would mark the second previously recorded instance of the so-called Glacier Loss Day. Further melting is expected by October, which will lead to a reduction in the size of the glaciers in the Swiss Alps.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since 2000, the turning point occurred in 2022  \u2013  June 26.<\/p>\n<p>The causes are primarily linked to the current heat wave and the May heat wave, both of which arose after a winter with minimal snowfall. Huss noted that the melting rates are currently high across the Alpine region. The longer such weather lasts, the worse the consequences for the ice, he explained: the difference between 35 \u00b0C and 40 \u00b0C is not significant under prolonged exposure.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the current state of the glaciers is the result of a combination of unfavorable factors: reduced snowfall and the influx of dust from the Sahara in March. The year 2026, in terms of events, is comparable to 2022, which was previously considered the most extreme year for the Alps in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p>According to Huss, the volume of snow that replenished the glacier surface in 2026 was about 25% below the average for 2010\u20132020.
