{"id":94366,"date":"2026-06-30T03:43:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T03:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/94366\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T03:43:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T03:43:14","slug":"nervous-wait-for-snow-in-nsw-alps-ahead-of-school-holidays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/94366\/","title":{"rendered":"Nervous wait for snow in NSW alps ahead of school holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Alpine communities in the NSW Snowy Mountains are facing a nervous wait to see if forecast snowfalls can rectify a &#8220;terrible&#8221; start to the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Warm temperatures and rain have hindered natural snowfall and snow-making operations at ski resorts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since the season was declared open on June 6, 14 centimetres of snow has been recorded at Spencers Creek and it has since melted away. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Snowatch forecaster Peter Taylor said it had been a rough start to winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;By Thursday morning, we&#8217;re probably going to reach the lowest of the lows as far as the season&#8217;s concerned, and it&#8217;s probably looking like the worst on record start to the season I&#8217;ve seen,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a screenshot of people at the snow\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ad61410623dcbd79c9f0199a2c79de6e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The slopes at Thredbo Resort are still busy this morning, despite patchy snowfall.\u00a0 (Supplied: Thredbo Resort snow cam)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But temperatures are expected to drop later in the week, improving the chances for snow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We should have snowfalls Thursday night through Friday and maybe Saturday morning,&#8221; Mr Taylor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Then it clears up next week with fine, sunny weather and cold nights for snow-making.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a worker shovelling snow\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/a18fe69fc233fd74dcfd335b1338d93b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There are hopes a forecast drop in temperatures will allow for more snow-making at NSW ski resorts. (Supplied: Perisher Resort)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That optimism is backed up by the Bureau of Meterology, which predicts up to 10 centimetres of snow to fall as low as 1,200 metres elevation on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Obviously it&#8217;s been a pretty average snow season so far, but at least there&#8217;s a little bit on the way,&#8221; meteorologist Robert Urbaniak said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Snow is tricky to forecast &#8230; if it comes down before it&#8217;s cold enough, then it falls as rain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hopes for snow<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Businesses in the alps have <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-19\/nsw-alps-no-snow-slow-start-to-ski-season\/106803068\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106803068\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently spoken out<\/a> about the lack of snowfall, and are hoping conditions improve in July in time for the school holidays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Michelle Lindsay, owner of Alpine Sports in Jindabyne, said many beginner skiers were still taking to the slopes, happy to learn on patchy conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But she is aware the bulk of the visitors, and the tourism dollars, will come when the snow does.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Like everybody in town, we&#8217;re quite anxious to see some snow fall as soon as possible.
