{"id":96116,"date":"2026-07-02T15:42:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T15:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/96116\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T15:42:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T15:42:12","slug":"nestle-confirms-its-changing-classic-kitkat-recipe-across-europe-with-two-big-differences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/96116\/","title":{"rendered":"Nestl\u00e9 confirms it&#8217;s changing classic KitKat recipe across Europe \u2014 with two big differences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/SEI_226929525-f52e.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29013195\" alt=\"One open KitKat chocolate bar surrounded by other KitKat bars on a yellow background.\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tA big change is coming for European fans of the KitKat (Picture: Shutterstock\/Ekaterina_Minaeva)<\/p>\n<p>Have a break, have a <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/video\/kitkat-are-taking-zero-chances-with-precious-cargo-after-400000-bars-stolen-3634043\/\" data-type=\"metro_video\" data-id=\"27936318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">KitKat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an idea that\u2019s resonated with the nation for almost 100 years, ever since the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/04\/11\/kitkat-truck-flanked-security-vans-400-000-bars-stolen-italy-27936241\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27936241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">four-fingered bar<\/a> of delight first burst onto the scene in 1935.<\/p>\n<p>Now, though, Nestl\u00e9 is making a <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/04\/10\/tesco-making-major-change-car-parks-this-weekend-new-30-minute-rule-27921520\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27921520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">huge change<\/a> to the classic treat across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The snacks have long been known for their crunch; biting into one, you\u2019ll first be hit with a smooth bite of <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/05\/11\/cadbury-launching-a-brand-new-twirl-chocolate-bar-uk-28323172\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"28323172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">chocolate<\/a> before the crackle of a wafer.<\/p>\n<p>But it seems there are plans in the works to enhance this experience, making the humble KitKat even crunchier.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tAsk Metro<\/p>\n<p class=\"metro-disclaimer\">Use AI to go deeper into the stories you care about \u2013 powered by Metro and trusted publications.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s not the only change coming.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/SEI_176559913-7a57.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29013197\" alt=\"Four finger KitKat biscuits.\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tKitKat is readily available across Europe, but the recipe is changing (Picture: PA)<br \/>\nWhat\u2019s going on with KitKats?<\/p>\n<p>The flavour is also going to be enhanced to give it a more distinct hazelnut taste, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-06-30\/nestle-to-change-kitkat-recipe-across-europe-to-make-it-crispier?embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We won\u2019t reduce the cocoa share but we will add a \u201cthird level\u201d to KitKat, that gives a more complex level of taste,\u2019 KitKat\u2019s global brand manager, Rouven Lochmuller, said at the company\u2019s annual event on Tuesday in Vevey, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The recipe change is scheduled for September 2027, and it\u2019ll be rolling out across Europe. <\/p>\n<p>But while it might seem like it\u2019s intended to appease long-standing KitKat loyalists, it\u2019s actually more to do with attracting new customers.<\/p>\n<p>Is the recipe change happening in the UK?<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, UK customers won\u2019t notice any difference, as the tweaks aren\u2019t being made over here.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because the KitKat bosses reckon the British recipe (yes, they differ ever so slightly across markets, most notably exemplified by the slightly different branding in place in the US) is \u2018already perfect.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Liberato Milo, Nestl\u00e9\u2019s head of confectionery and snacking, confirmed to Metro that UK KitKats will remain the same, saying: \u2018For UK consumers, nothing will change as British tastes run more to burned caramel, and the recipe is already perfect.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Fair enough.<\/p>\n<p>But across other European countries where KitKats are readily available, snack aficionados should prepare for a new era. This includes the likes of France, Germany, and Austria.<\/p>\n<p>And Europe isn\u2019t the only place where the recipe is being tweaked.<\/p>\n<p>While our version of a KitKat is manufactured in York by Nestl\u00e9, over in the US, Hershey is responsible for the recipe \u2013 and the company previously confirmed it would be switching things up slightly to create a \u2018creamier taste and texture\u2019 next year.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"402\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/SEI_303715826-4d27.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29013767\" alt=\"A four-finger KitKat against a black background.\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tFans aren\u2019t best pleased about the news (Picture: Nestl\u00e9)<br \/>\nWhat do fans think?<\/p>\n<p>While KitKat might think they\u2019re improving the recipe, not everyone\u2019s pleased about the change. <\/p>\n<p>Over on <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/instagram\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DaOrd4gDCMe\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">@leadgen<\/a> wrote: \u2018Changing a product that billions of people already love to attract people who do not love it yet is the kind of logic that has ended more brands than bad products ever did.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, @methanweber shared: \u2018KitKat was good growing up. It\u2019s totally different now and tastes like artificial nonsense in the US\u2026last summer I tried KitKat in Canada, and it tasted way better than the US version.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it,\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DaO3iAhk5-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">@arneepalmee <\/a>argued, as @filomenalodico asked: \u2018What about people who are allergic to hazelnuts? Why are we always left out?\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>And @mcnultyk9 added: \u2018They gonna make it cheaper to make while we probably pay more for less chocolate.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tDo you still enjoy KitKats?<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tSign up to Metro&#8217;s The Slice newsletter for your guide to what&#8217;s on in London, with trusted reviews, offers and giveaways.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/12\/11\/toffee-crisp-blue-riband-can-no-longer-called-chocolate-recipe-change-25375377\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">changes were made to two other Nestl\u00e9 products<\/a> which meant they could no longer be called actual \u2018chocolate\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>The confectionery giant reformulated the iconic Toffee Crisp and Blue Riband bars as a cost-saving measure, reducing cocoa mass in favour of a higher ratio of vegetable fats.<\/p>\n<p>In Britain, it can only be lawfully described as milk chocolate if it contains a minimum 20% cocoa and 20% milk.<\/p>\n<p>And although Nestl\u00e9 hasn\u2019t revealed the exact percentages in its new Toffee Crisp and Blue Riband recipes, they no longer meet this threshold following the update.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the product descriptions for both bars have been updated to say they\u2019re \u2018encased in a smooth milk chocolate\u00a0flavour\u00a0coating\u2019 rather than being covered in \u2018milk chocolate\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Nestl\u00e9 isn\u2019t the only brand facing allegations that their chocolate is becoming less, well, chocolatey. Cadbury fans have long suspected that the British confectionery giant has seen a reduction in quality.<\/p>\n<p>Previously writing into Metro HQ, a flurry of reader emails previously claimed <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/11\/10\/cadbury-responds-rumours-dairy-milk-doesnt-meet-criteria-called-chocolate-24624573\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dairy Milk<\/a> doesn\u2019t have enough cocoa solids to be called chocolate, and it\u2019s \u2018going against trading standards\u2019 to do so.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a rumour doing the rounds on\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/social-media\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a>\u00a0too, with numerous posts on\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/facebook\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/reddit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reddit<\/a>\u00a0saying its cocoa content has been reduced to the point \u2018it doesn\u2019t meet the criteria\u2019 and \u2018is no longer allowed\u2019 to be referred to as chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for the gossip train though, this is simply not true, with the word featuring on the flagship product\u2019s packaging and marketing materials alike.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our chocolate meets all relevant standards required by UK and EU legislation, and we provide clear information to consumers on pack so that they can make informed decisions about what they eat,\u2019 a spokesperson from Cadbury parent company Mondel\u0113z International told Metro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Do you have a story you\u2019d like to share?
