There is a lake with striking turquoise water overlooked by a craggy mountainside covered in trees.\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tSpectacular Mont Rebei Gorge (Picture: Catalonia Tourism Board)<\/p>\n<p>The two kids are decked out in red T-shirts and coloured pa\u00f1uelos around their necks, just like their parents. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Arties Frikis\u2019, their T-shirt slogans read \u2013 freaks, or crazy fans. <\/p>\n<p>But despite dad\u2019s coaxing, they refuse to jump over the flaming log in the main square, deliberately set alight as part of the Arties village festivities. <\/p>\n<p>Their mum says it\u2019s their first time, so they\u2019re a little scared. I don\u2019t blame them.<\/p>\n<p>Still, dubious pastimes aside, I can\u2019t help but buy into the village\u2019s charm. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tAsk Metro<\/p>\n<p class=\"metro-disclaimer\">Use AI to go deeper into the stories you care about \u2013 powered by Metro and trusted publications.<\/p>\n<p>Arties is picture-book pretty, with steep slate-roofed and stone-walled chalets, rocky streams and emerald-green hills where goats and cows still graze. <\/p>\n<p>Snow-capped peaks and turquoise lakes seem like they\u2019ve been cut and pasted from the Alps. But I\u2019m not in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/switzerland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Switzerland<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>This is the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/spain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish<\/a> Pyrenees in the Val d\u2019Aran region of Lleida Province, just a few hours from <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/barcelona\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barcelona<\/a> or two hours from Toulouse, straddling <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/catalonia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Catalonia<\/a> and Aragon.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"602\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_20260519_110808618-38fe-e1782911898700.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29000894\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe Cami Reiau trail with guide Charlie (Picture: Rachel Shue)<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the northern neighbour, no one cares if you\u2019re late and sobremesa is encouraged. It\u2019s also more affordable. <\/p>\n<p>Not to mention delightfully cool and crisp in the mornings and evenings, but pleasant during the day.<\/p>\n<p>Along the Camin Reiau (Royal Walk), we visit chalet-strewn villages with cheese shops and bakeries, pass gurgling mountain streams and spot rivulets of snow on Mount Aneto in the distance (Spain\u2019s third highest peak at 3,404m). <\/p>\n<p>The unpaved but well-cleared trail is easy to walk, mostly shaded with plenty of signposts when you get to the villages.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/IMG_20260518_111746605-3a74.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29000887\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tArties, where wild rivers and medieval stone meet (Picture: Rachel Shue)<\/p>\n<p>Daffodils, blueberries, pine trees, blue sky and sunshine all feature in the Disney-like scene, and while Bagergue was named one of Spain\u2019s most beautiful villages, Unha, Salardu, and Arties all look just as good to me.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie, our guide from Manchester, has lived in Spain for 14 years.<\/p>\n<p>He and Manel, originally from Reus, are patient with our group of excitable walkers \u2013 at one point, Manel even pulls out duct tape from his Mary Poppins backpack to patch up Judy\u2019s boots that have torn. <\/p>\n<p>From Wales, she\u2019s embarrassed to admit they\u2019re new, a rookie hiker\u2019s mistake.<\/p>\n<p>In Arties, traditional dancing, singing and fire jumping are what folks still do for larks. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u00a9IreneNunes_DSC_8831-0dee.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29000918\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tTraditional Aranese dancing in groups \u2014 you can see the \u2018Arties Frikis\u2019 in the background (Picture: ATTA\/Irene Nunes)<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a surprise even for many of the Catalan visitors seeing the dances for the first time. <\/p>\n<p>Twirling each other around in circles to the tune of accordions, the dancers sport clogs and bandanas, the women in long peasant-like skirts, the men in vests and knickerbockers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the beauty, we get a little deeper. <\/p>\n<p>During the Spanish Civil War, the area was contested and in 1944, Spanish guerrilla fighters invaded the area to wrest control from Franco. <\/p>\n<p>The region\u2019s semi-autonomy is notable \u2013 perhaps due to its isolated location and proximity to <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/france\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a>, and the local language Aranese is still taught in schools. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Colomers_Estanh-des-Garguilhs_01-b94c.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29000884\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThis lesser-visited region is known for impressive landscapes (Picture: Alvaro Novo\/Ara Lleida)<\/p>\n<p>Original frescos in the Santa Maria church, whose formidable structure is well-preserved given the harsh elements in winter, date from the 12th and 13th centuries, with several other monuments worth visiting from the same period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The capital Vielha is historic but has everything you need. <\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss the chance to imbibe local craft beer or cider, the intense blue cheese, or traditional soup with blood sausage \u2013 plus a range of hotel options whether you\u2019re on a budget or happy to splurge. <\/p>\n<p>The roads are good but it\u2019s nicer to walk and the public squares are uncrowded but lively. <\/p>\n<p>The best part? Mountain views everywhere you look.<\/p>\n<p>Patri Sala from local tour operator Camins tells me that without attracting more people to stay or visit, the town and surrounding villages would have found it difficult to survive, like many of Spain\u2019s rural regions where dwindling populations are the norm.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/valdaranphotos__DSC4084-56f9.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29000979\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tA village and Romanesque church in the Val d\u2019Aran region (Picture: Ara Lleida)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We needed to adapt,\u2019 she says. That doesn\u2019t mean they want to be exactly like Zermatt. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We want people who are curious to learn about our culture and heritage and respect nature,\u2019 she explains.<\/p>\n<p>If that strikes a chord, there are several hikes apart from the Camin Reiau. <\/p>\n<p>The Fifth Lake route is a multi-day hike where visitors stay in villages and family-run B&amp;Bs. <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s still snow on nearby peaks in late spring and a cool sprinkling of rain which brings out the perfume of lavender and flowers. <\/p>\n<p>Long-time resident N\u00faria Mart\u00ed manages the route and helps local owners maintain the gratuit pallars scheme, where donations from tourists support maintenance of the villages and hiking trails.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/\u00a9IreneNunes_DSC_9270-6205.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29000988\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tLocal cheeses from the Val d\u2019Aran region (Picture: ATTA \/ Irene Nunes)<\/p>\n<p>Coming from Barcelona and have a day or two extra? <\/p>\n<p>Kayaking the Mont Rebei Gorge is a highlight. The water is an astonishing teal blue colour and strata of limestone rock envelop you as you paddle through the canyon. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d been wanting to visit for some time after the drought a couple of years ago and the few hours I spent gliding through were too short.<\/p>\n<p>Canyoning, via ferratas, MTB biking, thermal baths, glacial lake day trips, and even forest bathing are on offer and don\u2019t require technical experience or gear. <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s so much to do that I\u2019m heading back in September. Who knows? I might even jump through a bonfire and become a \u2018friki\u2019 myself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Shue was a guest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalunya.com\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Catalonia Tourism Board<\/a>, but don\u2019t expect us to sugarcoat anything \u2014 our reviews are 100% independent.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tThe essentials\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tGetting there<\/p>\n<p>Several flights run daily from the UK (<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Dublin, Edinburgh, etc) to Barcelona on easyJet, Vueling, Ryanair, WizzAir and British Airways. <\/p>\n<p>Prices start from \u20ac44 return in September.<\/p>\n<p>From Barcelona<\/p>\n<p>High-speed train from Barcelona Sants station to Lleida Pireneus station. One-way from \u20ac16. Journey time: just over 1 hour (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.renfe.com\/es\/en\/travel\/prepare-your-trip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Renfe Avlo<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>From Lleida, take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsa.com\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ALSA<\/a> bus to Vielha. Journey time: 2 hours 30 minutes. Several departures a day, usually hourly, from \u20ac17.<\/p>\n<p>For Fifth Lake hike, change at Lleida and get the train to La Pobla de Segur. One way tickets \u20ac7.60, 1hr 35mins (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fgc.cat\/en\/tickets\/lleida-la-pobla-tickets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ferrocarrils<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Lleida is the Catalan name for the city and province. Lerida is Spanish. You\u2019ll more likely hear Lleida (yay-da) than the latter but French folks may also call it Lerida.<\/p>\n<p>Where to stay<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/paradores.es\/en\/parador-de-vielha\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hotel Parador Vielha<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is out of town so best if you have a car or don\u2019t mind getting taxis which are quite affordable c.\u20ac10. They have a spa and thermal baths.
