The move extends an effort the company had already completed in the U.S., where it removed artificial colorings from its domestic portfolio before setting the global target.

Several converging pressures have pushed food companies in this direction. Investors have grown anxious about packaged food brands as GLP-1 weight-loss medications reshape consumer habits, and shoppers increasingly demand shorter, cleaner ingredient lists. Across the industry, both retailers and manufacturers have been pulling FD&C synthetic dyes and sweeteners like corn syrup from their shelves and recipes.

Getting there was no easy task, Palzer explained. “It was not a slam-dunk,” he said, describing an extensive R&D effort that stretched over years. “We had to do a lot of R&D work because you have to screen all the natural solutions then you have to test those natural solutions during production, and then also test their shelf-life.” The motivation, he added, was straightforward: “We did it because consumers don’t appreciate artificial ingredients. They want simpler recipes.”

The push from Washington has added to the momentum: last April, the FDA and U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. jointly signaled their intention to eliminate artificial food colorings from the food supply, pointing to possible associations with ADHD, obesity, and diabetes — a position that many in the scientific community say still requires further study.

Nestlé is not alone in moving away from synthetic dyes. A recall launched late last year — triggered by the detection of cereulide, a bacterial toxin linked to nausea and vomiting, in products sold across Europe, Asia, and the Americas — has eroded the company’s market position in that category. Serena Aboutboul, who leads Nestlé’s nutrition business, was candid about the lasting damage, acknowledging that some parents who switched away from the brand are unlikely to return. “When you have unrest from parents, they will not … come back.
