Colombia<\/a> were eliminated from the World Cup last night after a 4-3 loss on penalties<\/a> against a resilient Switzerland side.<\/p>\n

N\u00e9stor Lorenzo and his men were unable to find a goal in over two hours of football and now find themselves on the plane back home.<\/p>\n

Not many chances fell for either side throughout the tie, with both goalkeepers having a relatively quiet day at the office considering what was at stake.<\/p>\n

Veteran James Rodr\u00edguez was at the heart of most of The Tricolour’s attacking play, however even the former Real Madrid star was unable to unlock the Swiss defence. <\/p>\n

Jaminton Campaz and Juan Quintero were brought on for the Colombians in regulation time, however even they weren’t able to trouble Gregor Kobel for the remainder of the match.<\/p>\n

Bayern Munich man Luis D\u00edaz was practically invisible for the majority of the match, despite being the man that many tipped to lead Colombia deep into the tournament this summer.<\/a><\/p>\n

The biggest chance of the match fell to the feet of substitute Campaz in extra time, however his shot from inside the 18-yard box was blazed over the bar – sending the game into a dreaded penalty shootout.<\/p>\n

To say the spot kicks were simply dramatic would be a huge understatement, with 30-year-old Davinson S\u00e1nchez smashing his shot into the crossbar, and former Manchester City centre back Manuel Akanji blasting his straight over said crossbar.<\/p>\n

Cucho Hern\u00e1ndez’s penalty was then saved by Kobel, before Camilo Vargas scored the winner to send Die Nati into pandemonium.<\/p>\n

Lack Of Attacking Spark<\/p>\n

As previously mentioned, one of the biggest disappointments last night for Colombia was surrounding the performance of Luis D\u00edaz.<\/p>\n

With the former Liverpool winger arguably in the prime of his career, and off the back of a brilliant campaign with Bayern Munich in which he managed 49 G+A in 51 games, N\u00e9stor Lorenzo would have been hoping for D\u00edaz to shine this summer.<\/p>\n

Having only managed one goal and one assist before the Round of 16 tie, his country would have been hoping for the 29-year-old to finally step up when it mattered most.<\/p>\n

The winger was unable to trouble Kobel throughout the game, only registering a single shot on target in over two hours of play – and he really struggled to cause issues down his flank against Denis Zakaria and Nico Elvedi, who had the seemingly impossible task of marking the Colombian.<\/p>\n

Another man who struggled to make much of an impact in the Colombian frontline was Luis Su\u00e1rez, who scored 28 goals in the Primeira Liga for Sporting Lisbon last season.<\/p>\n

He was practically invisible against the Swiss, recording only 12 touches in the match before he was replaced in the 81st minute.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old has had an extremely disappointing campaign this summer, and he would have been hoping to replicate the form of his infamous Uruguayan namesake.<\/p>\n

It has been a frustrating tournament, and one that may have been invaluable to the Sporting Lisbon man as he has been linked to a move with Turkish giants Fenerbah\u00e7e who may feel unsatisfied with his performances.<\/p>\n

A Painful End For The Tricolour<\/p>\n

There are not many more painful ways to lose a football match than in a penalty shootout.<\/p>\n

There will undoubtedly be a deflated feeling within the Colombian camp now, yet it is difficult to escape the conclusion that their elimination was ultimately their own doing.<\/p>\n

A run to the Round-of-16 is not anything to turn your nose up to, and topping a group that included European powerhouses<\/a> Portugal is no easy feat either.<\/p>\n
