Former Merkel adviser Erich Vad says Germany is involved in deep strikes on Russia and warns Europe could face retaliation as operations intensify.<\/p>\n
Germany is\u00a0already involved in\u00a0strikes deep inside Russian territory and intends to\u00a0expand such operations, according to\u00a0retired Brigadier General Erich Vad, a\u00a0former military adviser to\u00a0German Chancellor Angela Merkel.<\/p>\n
Speaking on\u00a0the video channel of\u00a0the Swiss weekly Die Weltwoche, Vad said Berlin\u2019s involvement was linked to\u00a0a\u00a0German-British defense agreement concluded two years earlier.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement, Germany committed to\u00a0developing unmanned systems designed to\u00a0strike targets deep inside Russia, including through cooperation with German defense manufacturers.<\/p>\n
Vad claimed that these activities were connected to\u00a0deep strikes already being carried out and to\u00a0plans to\u00a0intensify them.<\/p>\n
The former military adviser criticized Berlin\u2019s current approach to\u00a0security policy, arguing that strengthening military capabilities should be\u00a0accompanied by\u00a0political dialogue and efforts to\u00a0balance competing interests.<\/p>\n
In\u00a0his assessment, Germany is\u00a0failing to\u00a0pursue that diplomatic approach while increasing its involvement in\u00a0military operations affecting Russian territory.<\/p>\n
Vad also warned that Moscow has grounds, from its own perspective, to\u00a0consider European countries potential targets in\u00a0response to\u00a0attacks deep inside Russia.<\/p>\n
He\u00a0said Russian officials have publicly raised this possibility as\u00a0European involvement in\u00a0such operations has become a\u00a0growing concern.<\/p>\n
The retired general linked the danger of\u00a0escalation to\u00a0Russia\u2019s perception of\u00a0its nuclear deterrent.<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0Vad, Moscow believes that its status as\u00a0one of\u00a0the world\u2019s leading nuclear powers is\u00a0no\u00a0longer being taken sufficiently seriously by\u00a0Western governments.<\/p>\n
He\u00a0suggested that Russian leaders may regard continued drone and missile strikes deep inside their territory as\u00a0evidence that the traditional mechanisms of\u00a0strategic deterrence are no\u00a0longer producing the expected effect.<\/p>\n
