Kdy\u017e se pod\u00edval sm\u011brem k vod\u011b, spat\u0159il nad n\u00ed b\u011blavou mlhu. Nec\u00edtil se dob\u0159e, a tak \u0161el sp\u00e1t.<\/p>\n<p>Podobn\u00e9 zvuky sly\u0161ela n\u00ed\u017ee u jezera tak\u00e9 pastevkyn\u011b Halima Suleyov\u00e1. Pozd\u011bji je popsala jako k\u0159ik mnoha hlas\u016f. Pak se jej\u00edm rodinn\u00fdm s\u00eddlem prohnal siln\u00fd v\u00edtr a Suleyov\u00e1 ztratila v\u011bdom\u00ed. \u201eByla jsem jako mrtv\u00fd \u010dlov\u011bk,\u201c vzpom\u00ednala po letech pro Smithsonian Magazine. Kdy\u017e narazil na vyd\u011b\u0161enou Suleyovou, le\u017eely kolem n\u00ed des\u00edtky \u010dlen\u016f jej\u00ed rodiny a stovky kus\u016f dobytka.<\/p>\n<p>\u201ePro\u010d tady ti lid\u00e9 le\u017e\u00ed? Pro\u010d se u\u017e neh\u00fdbou?\u201c k\u0159i\u010dela podle Cheho vzpom\u00ednek \u017eena. Farm\u00e1\u0159 pozd\u011bji popsal je\u0161t\u011b jeden detail: na mrtv\u00fdch t\u011blech nesed\u011bly mouchy. Zahynuly toti\u017e tak\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Mu\u017e pot\u00e9 pokra\u010doval do vesnice pod jezerem. T\u00e9m\u011b\u0159 v\u0161ichni jej\u00ed obyvatel\u00e9 u\u017e ale byli tou dobou po smrti, mezi nimi jeho rodi\u010de, sourozenci, str\u00fdcov\u00e9 a tety. \u201ePlakal jsem, plakal a plakal,\u201c vzpom\u00ednal pozd\u011bji.<\/p>\n<p>Podobn\u00e9 v\u00fdjevy se toho r\u00e1na opakovaly i v dal\u0161\u00edch vesnic\u00edch v bl\u00edzkosti jezera. Lid\u00e9 um\u00edrali tam, kde je plyn zastihl, \u010dasto p\u0159\u00edmo ve sv\u00fdch domech. Pozd\u011bj\u0161\u00ed odborn\u00e9 pr\u00e1ce stanovily bilanci katastrofy na 1746 mrtv\u00fdch a tis\u00edce kus\u016f dobytka.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Samotn\u00e9 jezero p\u0159itom po ud\u00e1losti vypadalo jinak ne\u017e p\u0159edchoz\u00edho ve\u010dera: voda, kter\u00e1 b\u00fdvala pr\u016fzra\u010dn\u011b modr\u00e1, z\u00edskala \u010dervenohn\u011bd\u00fd odst\u00edn. V\u011bdci pozd\u011bji zjistili, \u017ee zm\u011bnu barvy zp\u016fsobila voda bohat\u00e1 na \u017eelezo, kterou prudk\u00e9 odplyn\u011bn\u00ed vyneslo z hlubin k hladin\u011b.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>V\u011bdci nejprve nev\u011bd\u011bli, co hledaj\u00ed<\/p>\n<p>B\u011bhem n\u011bkolika dn\u00ed za\u010dali k Nyosu p\u0159ij\u00ed\u017ed\u011bt odborn\u00edci z cel\u00e9ho sv\u011bta. Nikdo si nemohl b\u00fdt jist\u00fd, co p\u0159esn\u011b se stalo \u2013 ani zda se katastrofa nebude opakovat.<\/p>\n<p>Mezi nimi na m\u00edsto katastrofy zam\u00ed\u0159il tak\u00e9 americk\u00fd limnolog George Kling, kter\u00fd p\u0159itom Nyos nav\u0161t\u00edvil u\u017e rok p\u0159ed trag\u00e9di\u00ed p\u0159i v\u00fdzkumu kamerunsk\u00fdch jezer. Tehdy odebral vzorky jen z m\u011blk\u00e9 vody u b\u0159ehu a nic nebezpe\u010dn\u00e9ho nezaznamenal. Kdy\u017e se na m\u00edsto po katastrof\u011b vr\u00e1til, zjistil, \u017ee m\u00edstn\u00ed chlapec, kter\u00fd mu p\u0159i p\u0159edchoz\u00ed n\u00e1v\u0161t\u011bv\u011b pom\u00e1hal, zem\u0159el spolu s t\u00e9m\u011b\u0159 v\u0161emi lidmi, kter\u00e9 b\u011bhem prvn\u00ed n\u00e1v\u0161t\u011bvy poznal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eByl jsem otup\u011bl\u00fd,\u201c vzpom\u00ednal pozd\u011bji Kling pro Smithsonian. Nyos toti\u017e le\u017e\u00ed ve vulkanicky aktivn\u00ed oblasti a samotn\u00e9 jezero vypl\u0148uje hlubok\u00fd kr\u00e1ter. V\u00fdzkumn\u00edci ale postupn\u011b na\u0161li jin\u00e9ho vin\u00edka: oxid uhli\u010dit\u00fd.<\/p>\n<p>Oxid uhli\u010dit\u00fd geologick\u00e9ho p\u016fvodu toti\u017e dlouhodob\u011b pronikal do spodn\u00edch vrstev jezera. Ve\u010der 21. srpna v\u0161ak n\u011bco naru\u0161ilo stabilitu jezera. Voda bohat\u00e1 na zmi\u0148ovan\u00fd oxid uhli\u010dit\u00fd za\u010dala stoupat. S klesaj\u00edc\u00edm tlakem se z n\u00ed uvol\u0148ovaly bubliny, ty vyn\u00e1\u0161ely vzh\u016fru dal\u0161\u00ed hlubokou vodu a cel\u00fd proces se prudce zesiloval.<\/p>\n<p>V\u011bdci dodnes s jistotou nev\u011bd\u00ed, co onu \u0159et\u011bzovou reakci spustilo. Americk\u00e1 vy\u0161et\u0159ovac\u00ed zpr\u00e1va proto mluv\u00ed o neur\u010den\u00e9m mechanismu. Mezi mo\u017en\u00e9 spou\u0161t\u011b\u010de pat\u0159il nap\u0159\u00edklad sesuv p\u016fdy nebo jin\u00e9 naru\u0161en\u00ed vrstev jezera.<\/p>\n<p>Mrak zam\u00ed\u0159il do \u00fadol\u00ed<\/p>\n<p>Z jezera tak uniklo obrovsk\u00e9 mno\u017estv\u00ed oxidu uhli\u010dit\u00e9ho. Plyn nem\u00e1 barvu ani z\u00e1pach a m\u00e1 v\u011bt\u0161\u00ed hustotu ne\u017e b\u011b\u017en\u00fd vzduch. Dr\u017eel se proto p\u0159i zemi a ter\u00e9n ho vedl do n\u00ed\u017ee polo\u017een\u00fdch \u00fadol\u00ed. Pr\u00e1v\u011b tam st\u00e1ly vesnice.<\/p>\n<p>Odborn\u00e1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/037702739290067N?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studie<\/a>, kter\u00e1 pozd\u011bji spojila v\u00fdpov\u011bdi sv\u011bdk\u016f s geologick\u00fdmi \u00fadaji, rekonstruovala ud\u00e1losti ve\u010dera t\u00e9m\u011b\u0159 krok za krokem. Auto\u0159i popsali men\u0161\u00ed projevy u\u017e p\u0159ed hlavn\u00ed katastrofou, n\u00e1sledn\u00fd v\u00fdtrysk vody s b\u011blav\u00fdm oblakem a kolem des\u00e1t\u00e9 ve\u010der hlavn\u00ed ud\u00e1lost, po n\u00ed\u017e plyn zaplavil n\u00edzko polo\u017een\u00e1 \u00fadol\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>Lid\u00e9 vystaven\u00ed vysok\u00fdm koncentrac\u00edm oxidu uhli\u010dit\u00e9ho rychle ztr\u00e1celi v\u011bdom\u00ed. Americk\u00fd t\u00fdm n\u00e1sledn\u011b dosp\u011bl k z\u00e1v\u011bru, \u017ee v\u011bt\u0161inu ob\u011bt\u00ed zabila asfyxie spojen\u00e1 s vysokou koncentrac\u00ed oxidu uhli\u010dit\u00e9ho a nedostatkem kysl\u00edku. N\u011bkte\u0159\u00ed lid\u00e9 p\u0159e\u017eili jen proto, \u017ee se nach\u00e1zeli v\u00fd\u0161e ne\u017e jejich soused\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Varov\u00e1n\u00ed p\u0159i\u0161lo u\u017e o dva roky d\u0159\u00edve<\/p>\n<p>Nyos p\u0159itom nebyl prvn\u00ed. V srpnu 1984 zabil podobn\u00fd \u00fanik oxidu uhli\u010dit\u00e9ho z kamerunsk\u00e9ho jezera Monoun 37 lid\u00ed. Vulkanolog Haraldur Sigurdsson n\u00e1sledn\u011b zjistil, \u017ee hlubok\u00e1 voda v jeze\u0159e obsahuje obrovsk\u00e9 mno\u017estv\u00ed rozpu\u0161t\u011bn\u00e9ho plynu. Kdy\u017e vyt\u00e1hl vzorek vody z hloubky, tlak plynu podle pozd\u011bj\u0161\u00edho popisu Smithsonianu dokonce vyrazil uz\u00e1v\u011br n\u00e1doby.<\/p>\n<p>Sigurdsson za\u010dal uva\u017eovat o dosud prakticky nezn\u00e1m\u00e9m p\u0159\u00edrodn\u00edm nebezpe\u010d\u00ed: oxid uhli\u010dit\u00fd se m\u016f\u017ee v hlubok\u00e9m jeze\u0159e hromadit cel\u00e9 roky a pak se n\u00e1hle uvolnit. Sv\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/publications\/origin-lethal-gas-burst-lake-monoun-cameroun?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">z\u00e1v\u011bry<\/a> poslal \u010dasopisu Science je\u0161t\u011b p\u0159ed katastrofou u Nyosu. Podle Smithsonian Magazine je v\u0161ak \u010dasopis odm\u00edtl publikovat jako p\u0159\u00edli\u0161 nepravd\u011bpodobn\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Jak odzbrojit jezero<\/p>\n<p>Po katastrof\u011b p\u0159i\u0161lo dal\u0161\u00ed nep\u0159\u00edjemn\u00e9 zji\u0161t\u011bn\u00ed. Oxid uhli\u010dit\u00fd se v jeze\u0159e Nyos hromadil i nad\u00e1le. V\u011bdci proto pot\u0159ebovali zabr\u00e1nit tomu, aby se hlubok\u00e1 voda znovu nebezpe\u010dn\u011b nasytila.
