Across Europe, the number of registered electric vehicles is growing in the first quarter of 2025. The United Kingdom saw a record increase of 42% compared to the previous year and sold more than 100,000 BEVs for the first time. In Germany, numbers also rose by 37% compared to the previous year, and in Italy by as much as 64%, although from a low starting position of 4% market share.
The results of a representative survey conducted by Norstat on behalf of go-e among the German population reflect both this trend and the growing importance of electromobility: 7.2% of Germans are already using an electric car, and twice as many (14%) plan to purchase one in the next 3 years. By 2028, a fifth of German cars could already be electric.
CO2-neutral charging continues to be on trend
The trend towards energy transition and CO2-neutral charging also continues. 6.9% of respondents, representing the majority of electric car users, state that they use a wallbox to charge their electric cars. The survey thus shows that, regardless of the expansion of public charging infrastructure, home charging with an AC wallbox is currently the main support in the ramp-up of electromobility in Germany. 16% of respondents have a photovoltaic system at home, and another 14% intend to install one in the next few years. The use of home battery storage is also gaining importance – already 10% of respondents store their solar-generated energy to use as needed.
